RADNOR» Three women are being detained by police following a store theft and subsequent car crash in Villanova Friday afternoon, official said.

Township police received a report of a theft from a home furnishing store at St. David’s Square, 550 Lancaster Ave. about 2 p.m. Friday.

Shortly thereafter, a Radnor police officer conducted a traffic stop of a fourdoor gray sedan, which then fled the scene. Due to the nature of the incident, police did not pursue the car, according to Radnor Police Deputy Superintendent Andrew Block.

“A few minutes later police received the report of an accident,” said Block. “When police arrived they found a car overturned with two women out of the car walking around.”

Bags of merchandise could be seen lying around and in the car, which was resting on its roof in the middle of Newtown Road. A nearby road sign was knocked down. A second car was also involved, it was off to the side a few hundred feet up the road, according to police.

A witness saw a third woman get out of the car and flee the scene, Block said. She was apprehended by police on Ayrshire Drive in the nearby Ardrossan development.

Block said two of the women were taken to the hospital for evaluation, the driver of the second car had minor injuries and was taken to Paoli Hospital by Radnor Fire Company ambulance.

Block said the incident is still under investigation. No charges have yet been filed.

Newtown Road was closed between Abrahams and Hopethorpe Lanes much of the afternoon as a result of the crash.
