McCann channels emotions, Carroll wins District 12 title

-

Brian McCann Jr. had a heavy heart as he coached the Archbishop Carroll girls volleyball team to the program’s second straight District 12 Class 3A title Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Central at Bishop McDevitt High School.

McCann’s father, Brian Sr., passed away earlier in the day after suffering a heart attack Thursday.

“It was tough,” McCann said by phone. “He was a great guy.”

Carroll made short work of the Lancers, winning 25-9, 25-9, 25-8, for its third District 12 3A title in the last seven years and fifth overall.

The Patriots (19-2) won the 3A crown in 2011 and also won backto-back 2A titles in 2008 and 2009. The Patriots take on Pennsbury, the No. 4 team out of District 1, Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA Tournament. The Falcons fell to Perkiomen Valley, 3-1, in the third-place game Friday.

Senior setter Morgan Silks, the Catholic League’s MVP, posted 27 assists. Most of those helpers went to sophomore outside hitters Audrey Jones (17 kills) and Paige Monastero (14 kills). Gina Custer led the defense with 16 digs, while freshman Meghan McCann added nine digs and six kills.

“The kids played great McCann said. “They played with great focus.”

The sixth-seeded Fords needed a goal from Griffin Wada to stay alive with a 1-0 triumph over No. 11 Germantown Friends Friday afternoon.

The victory earns the Fords a semifinal date with the arch-rival Churchmen in the quarterfinals Tuesday. The third-seeded Churchmen downed No. 14 Westtown, 3-0. It will be the second of three meetings and the first of two next week.

The teams battled to a 1-1 draw at Talen Energy Stadium last month and are scheduled to meet Saturday at Epicopal Academy during the annual EA/Haverford/Agnes Irwin weekend.

Once again senior Bobby Stratts and sophomore Will Boyes combined on the shutout. Stratts made two saves and Boyes had one stop. EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 3, WESTTOWN 0 » Samuel Wilson tallied twice to send the Churchmen into the quarterfinals for the second straight year. All three goals came in the first half.
