The Lansdowne Human Relations Commission and St. Paul’s Church in Lansdowne present a showing and discussion of the 1915 film, ‘The Birth of a Nation,’ Wednesday-Friday this week at 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 50 East Plumstead Avenue in Lansdowne.

‘The Birth of a Nation,’ a three-hour, silent epic drama film (originally presented in two parts separated by an intermission) was directed and co-produced by D.W. Griffith and starred Lillian Gish. A commercial success, the film was highly controversial for its racist portrayals – and influential in the renewal of the Ku Klux Klan that same year.

As a milestone of cinematography and story-telling for that era, ‘The Birth of a Nation’ also established Hollywood and motion pictures as fixtures of American culture. In 1992, the Library of Congress, judging the film to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” designated it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

In the words of pioneering African-American filmmaker William Greaves, “No film of the time came near it in the use of a multiplicity of cinematic techniques, like close-ups, crosscutting, tracking shots and split screens, that influenced fil artists all over the world. It's a hell of a film."
