100 Years Ago – 1917: Eddystone is becoming widely known as one of the cleanest and best-paved boroughs of its size in the United States as a result of the many strangers coming here to work and spreading the reputation of the town. Borough authorities are striving to maintain the reputation of the borough along these lines, and are constantly adding to the appearance of the town by frequent improvements to its streets and buildings.
75 Years Ago – 1942: Elmer Layden, commissioner of the National Professional Football League, announced in Philadelphia that the fourth annual pro bowl classic will be played at Shibe Park, Philadelphia, on Sunday, Dec. 27. The postseason battle, which will get underway at 2 p.m., will bring together the 1942 champions of the National League and the circuit’s All-Stars.
50 Years Ago – 1967: A 27-year-old man was arrested Friday night after he and two other men allegedly attempted to hold the U-Need-A Furniture Co., 816 Edgmont Ave., Chester. The captured suspect was subdued by the store’s two owners and a passerby but the other two men escaped, police said. Police said the store’s owners, Irvin Barron, 53, of Swarthmore, and Morris Guralnick of Philadelphia were aided by a passerby, Jack Mosher, 46, of Chester. About 50 people watched through the front display window as the three men subdue the gunwielding assailant.
