Play miniature golf, benefit non-verbal students at CADES ‘putting zoo’
SWARTHMORE » CADES presents its third annual Putt Putt Palooza with this year’s theme “Putting Zoo at CADES on Sunday, Jan. 28. The fundraiser features 18 unique minigolf holes created by students, families, and business in the area. Proceeds go towards adaptive communication technology to help non-verbal physically and intellectually disabled students who attend CADES, a non-profit serving the disabled community for more than 65 years.
“Putting Zoo at CADES” is held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at CADES, 401 Rutgers Ave. Cost is $5 per person for nine holes. The event includes raffles, music and food. Players can reserve a tee time in advance at www.cades.org to avoid waiting in line; walk-ins are welcomed.
The course is created by students from area high schools, colleges, businesses, and families, who compete for cash prizes and a golden putter trophy. Among those making holes are high school students from Strath Haven, Ridley, Springfield, Garnet Valley, as well as Swarthmore College, Linn Architects, Sun East Federal Credit Union, and area families.
Putt Putt Palooza was created three years ago as a service project by the 8th grade class at Strath Haven Middle School. The event has grown each year and has raised over $18,000 for CADES, drawing more than 600 participants last year.

Plant lecture in Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE » The Hardy Plant Society/Mid-Atlantic Group continues its Joanne Walkovic Memorial Lecture series with “Container Savvy” featuring Jessica Walliser at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 28, in Chang Hou Hall on the Swarthmore College campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. Space is limited to 200 on a first come, first served basis.
Learn what kinds of containers to choose, what to fill them with, and how to care for a container garden throughout the growing season. Based on Jessica’s new book, “Container Gardening Complete,” this talk features ideas for container gardening projects, including ways to repurpose household items to create unique containers and trellises. Favorite container-worthy vegetable varieties are also highlighted, as well as tips for reducing maintenance and watering chores.
Horticulturist Jessica Walliser co-hosts “The Organic Gardeners,” an award-winning program on KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh. She is a former contributing editor for “Organic Gardening” magazine and a regular contributor to “Fine Gardening,” “Urban Farm” and “Hobby Farms” magazines. Walliser also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the American Horticultural Society.
Walliser’s book “Container Gardening Complete” is available for sale at the event (cash or check only). HPS is a not-forprofit volunteer organization for gardeners in the Mid-Atlantic region. The group encourage gardeners — from beginners to professionals — to learn more about horticulture and to share their skills, knowledge, and plants with each other. Members gather throughout the year to visit gardens and nurseries in the Delaware Valley. Get diabetes help in Chester
CHESTER » Joseph Dreams Inc. announces a series of free Diabetes Self Management Program workshops. DSMP is a workshop for people with or at risk for diabetes. It teaches the skills needed in the day-to-day management of Diabetes and to maintain and/or increase life’s activities.
The program is designed to help people gain self-confidence with their ability to control their symptoms and learn how their health problems affect their lives.
The Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) is an evidence-based selfmanagement workshop originally developed at Stanford University. The small group workshops are six weeks long, meeting once a week for two-and-a-half hours and are led by a pair of Trained Lay Leaders with Diabetes and/or diabetes knowledge. The meetings are highly interactive, focusing on building skills, sharing experiences and support. Participants learn how to make weekly action plans and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out the selfmanagement program.

Get wastewater cert. at DCCC
MARPLE » For those looking for a new career or advancement in their current position, Delaware County Community College is offering a Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification Program with classes beginning Jan. 24 at the Marple Campus, 901 S. Media Line Road, Media. Classes are held 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
Certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the program prepares entry-level operators for certification and employment. Wastewater Treatment Operators are essential in the treatment and transferring of water and wastewater. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay for Wastewater Treatment Operators is $45,760.
Delaware County Community College’s program offers all of the coursework, hands-on training in laboratories, and module tests necessary to help students pass the licensing exam for DEP certification. The program is divided into two 90-hour sessions. Successful candidates must enroll for certification levels 1 and 2.
