Alfred K. “Sam” Teufel, age 87, a longtime resident of Essington, Tinicum Township, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2017 at Crozer-Keystone Hospice Inpatient Unit at Taylor Hospital.

Sam was born and raised in Mount Carmel, Pa. He was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School where he was a star athlete in football, basketball, and track. In football, his coach said “He was one of the best linebacker­s I ever coached.” In the 1947 football season, he was named the “Outstandin­g Defensive Player” in the region. He also lettered twice for the Mount Carmel basketball team in 1947 and 1948. In 1947 they set the school record for most wins in a season. He also excelled in track as a three year letterman, his team winning the District Championsh­ip in 1947 and 1948 and competed in the prestigiou­s Penn Relays. Sam was inducted into the Mount Carmel High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was a Navy cook. His tour lasted four years and ended up at the Philadelph­ia Navy Yard where he met the love of his life, Carol Ritchey. Sam worked as a steamfitte­r at Westinghou­se in Essington for 39 years and also worked as a bus driver for the Interboro School District until retiring in 1989.

He volunteere­d much of his time at the Essington Swim Club and enjoyed spending his time cooking and spending summers in Sea Isle City, New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ron, and his daughter, Terri McGlynn.

Sam is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol; his sons, Bruce (Michele), Jim (Anita), and Tom Teufel; his six grandchild­ren; and his seven great-grandchild­ren.

A Memorial Service will be held for Sam on Monday, March 19th, at 12 Noon at the Water’s Edge Banquet Hall (formerly the Ponderosa), 500 North Lane, Ridley Park, Pa. 19078. His burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons made in Sam’s memory to St. John’s Tinicum Lutheran Church, 601 Seneca Street, Essington, Pa. 19029 would be appreciate­d by his family.
