100 Years Ago – 1918:

While ambling through the Bethel Court District yesterday afternoon, Frank Sankivicki was stopped by two damsels who, during a brief conversati­on, relived him of $48. Sankivicki reported the robbery to the police and an investigat­ion is being conducted.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

Still in a quandary over where and how to start a Victory Garden? Then you especially will find the Victory Garden meetings which are scheduled for this week helpful. All will feature colored slides which will be shown slowly and thoroughly and commented on by Harry O. Wilcox, county farm agent. Wilcox will also have answer any questions that his audience may have. The first will take place at Smedley Junior High School, the second at Ukrainian Hall and the third at McCaffery Village.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Caught in the highest interest peak since the 1930s,” the Chester School Board sold a $3.8 million bond issue with a total $3.9 million in interest to finance constructi­on of the proposed Christophe­r Columbus Elementary School. School director Donald F. Tonge said the school constructi­on could force the school board to increase the district tax rate by about 2 ½ mills unless the board can find ways to trim the budget. The current school tax is 56 ½ mills of $56,50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

J.E. Rhoads & Sons has survived countless economic twists and turns in 291 years, but living through the perilous ‘90s may be more difficult for a company that ills itself as the nation’s old business. Founded as a tannery in Marple in 1702, the Newark, Del.-based company evolved through nine generation­s of the Rhoads family into a nationally recognized industrial conveyer belt manufactur­er, including making the belt for President Reagan’s exercise treadmill. In an age when eight out of 10 small businesses fold in the first two years of operation, J.E. Rhoads has struggled as manufactur­ing customers cut back on their orders of conveyor belts.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

“Spry” does not even begin to describe Arizona Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee for president of the United States. At 71 years old, McCain was fresh-faced and ready to engage his base at a campaign stop at the Springfiel­d Country Club Friday morning, having come from a rather late night in Washington, D.C.
