100 Years Ago – 1918:
Four additional arrests were made in the round-up of the “Crook Club” which has been operating in Chester for many months. More than a score of robberies, including nine automobiles, have been traced to the gang. Confessions of the young crooks serve to implicate their pals and a number of others are expected to be taken into custody today. The boys have been encouraged in their thieving — the proprietor of Pete and Jim’s pool emporium at Third and Franklin streets bought stolen hams from them.
75 Years Ago – 1943 :A 34-year-old Upper Darby woman, of South Carol Boulevard, was held for the Grand Jury on a drunken driving charge in Philadelphia Wednesday. A policeman testified that her car crashed into a light standard at 19th and Market streets, and it took him 20 minutes to persuade her to open the door. The woman denied being intoxicated and said an impediment in her speech had given that impression. Dr. Harold Antrim examined her after her arrest and pronounced her drunk.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
Delaware County Community College officials were negotiating today purchase of a permanent campus for the school, following Tuesday’s Pennsylvania Supreme Court decision upholding its legality. Although they were reluctant to stay how close they are to finding a permanent site for the two-year college, indications are the school’s trustees may announce it in two weeks. D. Barry Gibbons, the trustees’ solicitor, said “probably a list of a dozen sties” are being considered.
25 Years Ago – 1993: A lengthy chapter in Middletown history closed Monday when council unanimously approved a revised final plan for the 86-unit Darlington Valley planned residential development of townhouses and single dwellings on the 102-acre Dick Darlington property.
The property is under agreement of sale to Mark Ressler.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
For the third consecutive time, Eddystone council members declined to give themselves pay raises which they are entitled to under state law. Council President Tom Orio and Mayor Ralph Orr receive $2,000 a year, while the other six council members are paid $1,500 annually. Council did, however, agree to a $1,300 raise for Police Chief Bill Conner, which brings his salary to $70,000 a year. Conner has 28 years in law enforcement.
