‘Violent’ defendant convicted of trying to strangle his wife
MEDIA COURTHOUSE » A Sharon Hill man was convicted of attempted murder for nearly strangling his wife in 2016 after she told him she wanted a divorce.
Tyre Bey, 42, was also found guilty of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and simple assault following a jury trial before Judge Richard M. Cappelli last week.
“Mr. Bey is a violent, dangerous individual who, with his bare hands, nearly killed the mother of his children and the woman he supposedly loved,” said District Attorney Katayoun Copeland in a release. “As a repeat, violent offender, Mr. Bey faces a minimum of 10-years imprisonment.”
Sharon Hill Borough Police spoke with the victim at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital Sept. 8, 2016. She told police Bey entered her bedroom at approximately 2 a.m. and the two began discussing their relationship.
The victim set her cell phone to record the conversation and captured audio of Bey punching her in the face after she told the defendant that she wanted a divorce. Bey then choked the woman and could be heard saying, “You’re going to die tonight” and “Bye, bye, bye, bye...”
The victim bit the defendant’s finger during the struggle and he stopped. Bey then pleaded with the woman not to call the police and said that he would stay away. The victim took her children and drove herself to the hospital, where she spoke to police.
The judge admitted the audio recording at trial due to a carve out in the Wiretap Act for victims who have a reasonable suspicion that a violent crime is about to occur.
Dr. Gregory Casey, the trauma doctor, testified that the injuries the woman sustained were consistent with her story and were capable of causing serious bodily injury.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew A. Catania prosecuted the case. Bey was represented by defense attorney Scott Kramer. The investigation was conducted by Detective Vincent Port of the Sharon Hill Borough Police Department and Detective Sgt. Kenneth Bellis of the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division.
Bey has been remanded to the county prison in Concord pending sentencing, set for June 4.
