NFL DRAFT: EAGLES DAY 3 PICKS

- — Bob Grotz

Fourth round, 125 overall: Avonte Maddox, CB, 5-9, 184, Pitt. Upside:

Fits the little dog that tries to play like a big dog mold of Joe Douglas. Aggressive boundary corner who doesn’t bite on double moves, per Ourlad’s Scouting Services. Has speed to cover deep. Clocked 4.39 in the 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. Also had a 37-inch vertical leap and 10-5 standing long jump.

Downside:

Lack of size limits him in covering tall receivers and in taking on blocks. In catch-up mode too often per scouting publications. Prone to injury, per Ourlad’s, which notes he was in and out of the lineup. Considered a sixth or seventh-round pick. Played outside in college, slot at Senior Bowl.

At his size, he’s a reach. The speed could help him play slot, but teams are trending toward big slot receivers. Maybe the Eagles can have him simulate opposing speed receivers.

Summary: Fourth round, 130 overall: Josh Sweat, DE, 6-5, 250, Florida State. Upside:

Big first step, long frame and real-time speed and athleticism. Sweat ran a stunning 4.53 40 at 251 pounds at the combine. His vertical leap was 39 1⁄2 inches. Hard to believe a severe knee injury in high school (torn ACL, dislocated kneecap) had him wondering if he might lose part of the leg. Ourlad’s lists Sweat at outside linebacker and calls him “one of the more overlooked prospects” in the draft. Sweat’s ability to be a terror off the edge, per Ourlad’s, is still very much alive.

Injuries dropped him to fourth-round status and are a concern of the Eagles. Underwent surgery on ACL, MCL and PCL at some point. It appears he’s strictly an edge rusher, although he played a four-technique to appease FSU coaches.

Measurables are off the charts for a third-day pick, including the speed. If he can stay healthy, Eagles have another rotational pass rusher. Mentoring of Chris Long and Brandon Graham cannot hurt.

Downside: Summary: Sixth round, 206 overall: Matt Pryor, OT, 6-7, 338, TCU. Upside:

Large frame, long arms and above average functional strength as he benched 225 pounds 23 times at his pro day. Also clocked a 5.60 in the 40 that day. Started eight games at right.
