Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1918:
The committee of Wilde Post, No. 25, G.A.R., in charge of the Memorial Day exercises are anxious that all organizations who will turn out report as soon as possible this fact for Arthur Martin, chairman of the Parade Committee. A committee of citizens, sons of veterans of the Civil War, are working with the Grand Army veterans to make a good turnout on Memorial Day afternoon. It will require about two hours’ time for any organization to take part and assist in commemorating the day of all days with the veterans of the Civil War. 75 Years Ago – 1943 :A man dressed in a sailor’s uniform today snatched the handbag of Mrs. Janet Bogden,24, of 2600 W. Third St., Chester, as she walked along a Philadelphia street. Mrs. Bogden, whose husband is in the Army, said the purse contained $8, a check for $6, a gold wedding ring, a diamond engagement ring and a signet ring.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
Clothing made in home economics classes at Nether Providence High School will be modeled in a fashion show at 2:45 p.m. Thursday in the school auditorium. Miss Sonia Mangigian, an instructor, is chairman. Sue Demarest, a senior, will be commentator. 25 Years Ago – 1993: Three companies submitted bids on the county’s unlucky Riverbridge Industrial Center – the 55-acre acre former site of Ford Motors and Reynolds Metals in Chester – but two of them will likely be thrown out because they didn’t meet bid specifications. The low bid, $1 from Bowersox Precision Castings of Trainer, and the high bid, $1.86 million from Altemose Reality Corp. of Glen Mills, were both pronounced defective. That left only Industrial Investment Inc. of Ambler, which offered $1.2 million. County council can reject all the bids and advertise it again.
10 Years Ago – 2008: As expected, a reorganization meeting of what former county council Chairman Andy Reilly called “the most effective Republican organization in the state” produced very little in the way of actual reorganization. County Recorder of Deeds Thomas Judge Sr. was again elected to a four-year term as chairman of the Delaware County Republican Executive Committee, a position he’s held since 1975. Vice Chairwoman Carol Miller also retained her title, as did Treasurer John McBlain during the choreographed meeting that lasted all of half an hour and provided no unexpected intrigue.
