100 Years Ago – 1918: The work of the Chester Emergency Housing Corp., which is erecting shipbuilde­rs’ homes on the Buckman tract of 38 acres on West Ninth Street, at the lower limits of this city, is being pushed along in remarkable fashion. In fact, the rapidity with which the government has advanced things there is the wonder hundreds of people used to travelling on the cars between Philadelph­ia, Chester and Wilmington. Only a few weeks ago the place was quiet as it could be for an unoccupied country residence.

75 Years Ago – 1943: The 15-yearold “zoot suiter” who attacked a matron in the Juvenile Detention Home on Saturday was arrested in Baltimore, Md., shortly before noon today near his home. The victim of the attack, Mrs. Lottie Smith, 59, was reported to be out of danger at

the Chester Hospital. Mrs. Smith was shot three times by the boy while making his escape. He was arrested in Lansdowne Thursday for breaking into three homes.

50 Years Ago – 1968: The Springfiel­d School Board is considerin­g building a middle school on a large tract it hopes to buy in the northeast part of the township. School Board President Richard Carter said the so-called Borgh Tract off State and North Rolling roads is being considered for the middle school for sixth through eighth grades and high school athletic fields. 25 Years Ago – 1993: The Chester Housing Authority is asking local corporatio­ns to help its senior citizen tenants escape this summer’s sweltering heat. CHA Executive Director Jackie Pryor said she is drafting a letter asking for window air conditione­r donations to be installed at the twin Chester Towers at 10th Street and Avenue of the States after learning that a malfunctio­n cut off the air conditions in the common areas on the first floor of both towers. The towers’ units are not air conditione­d.

10 Years Ago – 2008: A feature film with a Delaware County connection will be screened on Tuesday, July 29, at the NEWFILMMAK­ERS New York Film Festival in New York City. “Mr. Bones” features actor Don W. Newton from Delaware County and is the feature-film directoria­l debut of Nathan Ross Freeman. The film will be shown at the Anthology Film Archives Theater, 32 Second Ave. at Second Street on the Lower Eastside.
