100 Years Ago – 1918:

Former Chester Councilman B.D. Wright opened a barrage-fire against the new traffic regulation­s today in police court before Magistrate Berry. After a lengthy argument, he was given the privilege of paying his fine or serving 24 hours in jail. He paid — but it was under protest. Wright represente­d his son, who, according to Mounted Officer Fenton, had parked his car for more than a half hour in the rear of his store on Edgmont Avenue, between Fifth and Sixth streets. Wright said the car was out of commission and was being repaired.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

More than 1,000 Chester mothers of children between 4-14 are anxious to work in local war industries, but lack of day-care facilities for their 2,000 children keeps them at home, revealed a survey by the Child Care Committee of Chester. It disclosed that many children are now being left at home without proper care while their parents go off to the war plants each day. 50 Years Ago – 1968: The third week of concerts by Chester City Band in Chester Park and Glen Providence Park, Media, has been announced. Florence Pollock, soprano, will be heard in “When Day is Done,” “Vienna Dreams,” “Deep in My Heart” and “Il Bacio.” The band, directed by Thomas G. Leeson Sr., will presents its varied program, including several marches, a folk suite, themes from “Doctor Zhivago,” a symphonett­e, “Pavanne” by Morton Gould, novelty, patriotic and religious numbers. 25 Years Ago – 1993: Marple dipped into a state legislativ­e slush fund to “provide a helping hand” to about 40 businesses in the 2500 block of West Chester Pike in Broomall. The township has been awarded a $50,000 grant — from WAMs, or “walking around money” — to revitalize the block. The money is from the legislativ­e initiative fund, controlled by the two top Republican­s and the two top Democrats in the state House and Senate. 10 Years Ago – 2008: Upper Darby and Millbourne police chiefs say they are prepared to handle any traffic problems that may occur with the nine-day closing of the 63rd and Market streets intersecti­on due to El reconstruc­tion. SEPTA commuters and motorists face a doubleedge­d nightmare that began Friday night with the closing of the busy intersecti­on which is a major connection with points in West Philadelph­ia and Center City.
