Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1918: The campaign for the Fourth Liberty Loan has reached the rapid-fire stage. Counting today, only three days are left to account for the heavy balance of subscriptions yet to be raised. Much is expected from the last minute spurts in the industrial plants, whose employees have so consistently rallied to the support of the war on every similar occasion.
75 Years Ago – 1943: Completion and successful operation of a new plant exclusively for the manufacture of 100-octane aviation gasoline by the Sun Oil Co. was announced today by J. Howard Pew, president. Simultaneously Sun Oil labor management war production committee announced that the plant – the largest of its type in existence – would be dedicated by Petroleum Administrator for War Harold L. Ickes on Oct. 27.
50 Years Ago – 1968: President Judge Henry G. Sweney granted a stay order, temporarily preventing the Darby Township School Board from implementing his recent order to integrate the township’s public schools. The supersedeas was issued as a result of an appeal that is being filed with the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court from Sweney’s Oct. 4 integration order.
25 Years Ago – 1993: A longtime dream became a reality as about 300 people committed to emergency response service celebrated the dedication of the Delaware County Emergency Service Training Center. The worthless burnt shell of the old vacant Folcroft Incinerator has been turned into a sophisticated training center that is now worth about $2.5 million. The entire project was done at no cost to taxpayers. Countless community volunteers, unions and businesses donated their time, labor, money, equipment and supplies to create the center that U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon, R-7, said was “second to none in America.” 10 Years Ago – 2008: The Rev. Dr. J. William Carpenter will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination at a service at 11 a.m. this Sunday at Holmes Presbyterian Church in Ridley Township. During his 39-year tenure, he has served on numerous committees of the Philadelphia Presbytery, the Synod of the Trinity, and at the national level of the Presbyterian Church. He attended the Free Reformed University in the Netherlands where he earned the doctorandus degree in New Testament Theology and then taught at Westminster College in Pennsylvania.
