100 Years Ago – 1918:

In the past month quite a large number of druggists in Chester have been putting up prescripti­ons for wine, whisky and distilled spirits in all forms, and have not paid special tax, on the assumption that they were permitted to do this without such payment. This opinion is a mistaken one. It is important that those who began filling such prescripti­ons after the order closing the saloons during the outbreak pay the taxes before the expiration of October, or they will be liable for a penalty of an additional 50 percent.

50 Years Ago – 1968: An alleged lack of communicat­ion between Nether Providence Township residents and the school board was discussed at length this week by the Committee of Concerned Taxpayers. It was the first public meeting of the CCT since it was organized in May to protest high costs of the new high school and spiraling school tax millage. Chairman Ernest P. Schofield, 830 Parkridge Drive, reviewed studies by CCT members and took issue with school board President John Palmer Smith on the promised meeting between CCT and the school board that never materializ­ed.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Aston commission­ers recently presented a proclamati­on to several representa­tives of the Aston Lions Club in recognitio­n of its 60th anniversar­y. Originally sponsored by the Marcus Hook Lions Club, the Aston Lions Club was formed in

1948. At that time, the charter was presented with

37 associates, and today the organizati­on boasts 68 members. “The Lions Club produced the first township directory, which has continued through the 23rd edition,” the proclamati­on included in its list of club accomplish­ments.
