Radnor Run steps off this weekend

The Penn Medicine Radnor Run will celebrate its 41st year on Sunday, Oct. 28, starting at the Radnor Township Building in Wayne. The race features a certified 5-mile timed course and a 1-mile fun run/walk for all ages. Money raised from the event supports the American Lung Association in Pennsylvania and its mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research.

Radnor resident Ashley Murosk, will kick off the start of the race, and lead a team of family and friends who will participate. Ashley is 25 and has lung cancer. At the age of 19, while attending Penn State University, she was examined by a school nurse for a back pain. X-rays showed a “dark spot” on her lung. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with stage II non-small cell lung cancer.

“My family and I were shocked. I was just 19 years old when diagnosed. It turns out, the cause of my rare lung cancer came from an ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) gene mutation,” says Ashley. “No one deserves lung cancer. That’s why I’m excited to join the American Lung Association’s Penn Medicine Radnor Run to help raise awareness and much needed research dollars to help those suffering from all lung diseases, including lung cancer.”

After having surgery to remove her tumor, chemotherapy and radiation, Ashley went into remission. Three years later, Ashley received news that the cancer was back and had spread. It has been a long road. “I have had gamma knife radiation therapy to my brain, rounds of radiation therapy to my spine, and I am currently on an oral chemotherapy pill that is designed for the ALK gene mutation. I am fighting and currently doing well thanks to my wonderful support system,” said Ashley.

Radnor Run’s main race is a 5-mile USA Track & Field sanctioned and certified race through the surrounding scenic neighborhood in Wayne. The Radnor Run also includes an untimed

1-mile fun run or walk for adults and youth of all ages. Presenting sponsor Penn Medicine will host a health fair on site. Start/Finish is at Radnor Township Building, with the race starting at 8:30 a.m.
