Widener makes Quick work of Alvernia in milestone win

-

Widener celebrated a couple of milestones Saturday with a partysized victory.

The Pride blew out Alvernia 51-0 for Widener’s 100th victory at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. It was also the 50th career head coaching win for Widener coach Mike Kelly.

Widener is 100-35 at Quick Stadium, dating to the 1994 season.

The Pride started by capitalizing on an interception by Naraye WellsDotson, and Johnny Bauer finished the ensuing drive with a one-yard scoring plunge.

Later in the frame, Wells-Dotson blocked a punt, giving Widener the ball on the 10. Facing a thirdand-eight, Mitchell Vierling hit Pat Downey with a touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.

Bauer scored again from the 1 and Larry Eimer hit a 51-yard field goal in the second en route to a commanding 24-0 halftime lead. The Pride cruised from there. Bauer would end up with three plunges for touchdowns and Vierling would hit Downey with a second TD pass in the third quarter.

The Pride (4-4, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) limited the Golden Wolves (1-7, 0-7 MAC Commonwealth) to 128 yards of offense. Alvernia did not complete its first pass until the second half. WILLIAMSON 16, COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGES 8 >> It took 12 seconds for Williamson Trade School to overcome a day of rainy frustration and finish its most successful season since 1983.

DeJuan Outlaw, deputizing at quarterback for the injured Vince DelPercio, ran for a 13-yard touchdown to tie the game at 8 with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter, then hit Hunter Thornton for the two-point conversion. Two plays later, defensive end Quincy Williams stripped Christon Fitzgerald and returned the fumble seven yards for a score. Outlaw ran in the conversion to give Williamson (7-1) all the points it needed.

Fitzgerald had staked Community Christian to an 8-0 lead on its first play from scrimmage with a 65-yard touchdown run.

Precious little offense followed that opening burst. Community Christian finished with 171 yards of offense, 82 of them rushing yards by Fitzgerald. Williamson tallied

218, including 94 on 21 carries by Outlaw, who added a 25-yard reception. Williams ran for 54 yards on 13 carries. Gino DiCamillo had eight tackles (two for loss) and a fumble recovery.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 34, VILLANOVA0 >> Carlos Washington had 179 yards rushing and two touchdowns and quarterback Trevor Knight ran for two scores to help New Hampshire beat Villanova.

Knight was 13-of-23 passing for

158 yards and the New Hampshire defense limited Villanova to 164 total yards, including just 13 rushing.

Washington, on the first play from scrimmage, took a handoff and raced 75 yards for a touchdown. Knight scored on an 11-yard run with 6:10 left in the first half and, after a Villanova (3-5, 0-5 Colonial Athletic Association) fumble, Washington’s 16-yard TD run gave UNH (2-6, 1-4) a 24-0 lead one minute, 32 seconds later.

Knight added a 7-yard scoring run in the third quarter and Jason Hughes, who kicked a 37-yard field goal in the first quarter, made a 26-yarder early in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Villanova went three-and-out four times, punted eight times and moved into New Hampshire territory just three times. Nova missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt in the first quarter, was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 2 just before halftime and failed to convert a fourth-and-16 from the 20 in final minutes.

PENN 13, BROWN 7 >> Karekin Brooks rushed for 246 yards and the Penn defense shut down Brown.

Penn (5-2, 2-2 Ivy League) scored its only points in the first half on its way to sending the Bears to their 12th straight conference loss, dating back to the

2016 season.

After being stymied for most of the game Brown marched 65 yards in five plays to cut the lead six when Michael McGovern hit Jakob Prall on a 20-yard TD toss with 27 seconds left in the game.
