75 Years Ago – 1943: Busy wartime Delaware County paused momentarily at 11 a.m. today, paid silent tribute to those Americans who fought and died a quarter-century ago, and then returned grimly to the task of speeding toward victory in World War II. Although today marks the 25th anniversary of the Armistice that brought millions of Americans home from the trenches, the usual patriotic observances are being curtailed in order not to interfere with war production for the 20th century’s second worldwide struggle.
50 Years Ago – 1968: More than three years of planning on the Chester Towers public housing apartments for the elderly at 10th Street and Edgmont Avenue will be climaxed Tuesday with the signing of the project’s general construction contracts. The R.M. Shoemaker Co. of Philadelphia and the Chester Housing Authority will sign the contacts at the McCaffery Village community office,
12th Street and Highland Avenue.
25 Years Ago – 1993: Penn-Delco K-5 students have a unique opportunity to learn hands-on safety lessons at the new PennDelco Fire and Life Safety Center at Sun Valley High School. The permanent year-round room is the first of its kind in the county, a central facility to be used by the community’s youth in order to become prepared for modern society’s problems and hazards.
10 Years Ago – 2008: Police investigating a reported burglary discovered a marijuana farm, cache of weapons, Nazi and police uniforms and badges inside a house in the Kirklyn section of Upper Darby. The homeowners, who were also in possession of an
AK-47 semiautomatic loaded with 30 rounds, were taken into custody and charged with drug-dealing violations. “This is not something we see every day,” Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.
