Darden leads Del Val past Widener
Senior quarterback Dashawn Darden, a Cardinal O’Hara graduate, ran for two scores Saturday in leading visiting Delaware Valley College past Widener 33-0 for both pride and “Keystone Cup” honors.
Darden scrambled for a 33-yard touchdown run with 1:47 left in the first quarter to get the Aggies on the board first. He then ran one in from seven yards out midway through the fourth quarter to essentially put the game away.
Darden led an Aggies’ offensive output of 308 total yards to Widener’s 166. With two losses to end the season, the Pride finished 4-6.
William & Mary 24, Villanova 17
DeVonte Dedmon pulled in an 18-yard pass from Ted Hefter to cap a five-play, 71yard drive to start the second half to spark William & Mary to a Colonial Athletic Association win at Villanova.
The score put William & Mary up, 21-7 and, after Kris Hooper kicked a 37-yard field goal to make it 24-7, the Tribe withstood a
10-point, fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Wildcats to earn the victory.
William & Mary (4-5, 3-3) plays host to Richmond in the regular season finale Saturday. Villanova travels to Delaware Saturday for the regular season finale for those teams, a 12 noon kickoff.
Shon Mitchell found Tyler Klaus from 16 yards out early in the second quarter to put the Tribe up, 7-0, but Aaron Forbes answered for the Wildcats, scoring from the 1 to tie the game at 7-7.
Forbes also pulled in a five-yard pass for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and Drew Kresge added a late 19-yard field goal, but Villanova (4-6, 2-4) could get no closer.
‘Nova quarterback Zach Bednarczyk threw for 212 yards and a touchdown, and tight end Ryan Bell had seven receptions for 79 yards.
Villanova trailed 24-7 at the start of the final period, but pulled to within 24-14 on Forbes’ touchdown reception with 12:20 remaining. Kresge’s field goal cut it to one possession, then the Wildcats got the ball back at their own 43 with 3:46 remaining.
That drive lasted just three plays before a lost fumble gave the ball back to the Tribe. ‘Nova had one more crack after blocking a punt, and Bednarczyk drove them to the Tribe’s 36. But two rushing attempts on third and fourth down fell short after that.
Hefter was 8-of-17 for 141 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Evans ran for 58 yards and a score.
