Foundation for Delaware County welcomes new chief financial officer
MEDIA >> The Foundation for Delaware County has hired Laura DeFlavia as chief financial officer. In this new position, DeFlavia will oversee all financial operations of the growing foundation.
According to the Foundation’s president, Frances Sheehan, DeFlavia has experience in public accounting serving various industries including nonprofits, retail, service organizations and government entities, as well as expertise in investment.
The Foundation for Delaware County is the largest philanthropy serving Delaware County. Headquartered in Media with services sites in Chester, Upper Darby and Springfield, the foundation made nearly
$1.5 million in grants last year to improve the health and quality of life for the diverse residents in Delaware County. The Foundation for Delaware County also operates Healthy Start, the WIC nutrition program, NurseFamily Partnership, Drug Free Communities, El Centro, and a health resource center for students in the Chester Upland School District. Rep. Steve Barrar to hold open house
To give residents a chance to learn more about the services available from his office, Rep. Steve Barrar (RChester/Delaware) will hold an open house 2-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at his district office, One Beaver Valley Rd., Chadds Ford. The event will also provide residents with the opportunity to celebrate the retirement of Barrar’s staff member, Ann Iacono, who has faithfully served the district for 21 years.

The event is open to residents of the 160th District which includes the townships of Bethel, Chadds Ford, Concord Township, Kennett, Pennsbury, Pocopson and Upper Chichester.
Volunteers sought for MLK Day of Service in Chester
The MLK Commemorative Committee of Chester & Vicinity will present the MLK Day of Service from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21. This year’s activities will be centered on the
500 block of the Avenue of the States with more than
20 happenings at five locations. Activities will be offered for all ages and include Dr. Daisy Century performing as Harriet Tubman and aviator Bessie Chapman, Black History
101 Mobile Museum, Heritage Bus Tours, mural and t-shirt painting, a book fair with readings, author signings and giveaways, and debut of a documentary film about the YWCA Chester. Continental breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served. Those interested in volunteering should arrive between 8 and 10 a.m. All events are free to the public.

Learn about free job search resources at local libraries
Joseph’s People of Central Delaware County will host Diane Arnold, who will present “Free Job Search Resources at Your Local Library,” 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Media Presbyterian Church’s Hassler Chapel, 30 East Baltimore Avenue, Media. All are welcome, without regard to religious affiliation.
Attendees can learn how to use the Delaware County Libraries’ resources in their job search and find targeted job listings in any area of interest and experience. People can learn how to use resources like Tutor.com to write an upto-date resume and a targeted cover letter and can sign up for a library card on the spot for instant access to all of the County’s no-cost library resources.
Earning a MSLIS in Library and Information Science from the University of Kentucky, Arnold was employed as a Librarian at Chestnut Hill College before joining Delaware County Library System. For 16 years, the speaker has been a librarian, showing adults how to get the most out of electronic resources.
