McLaughlin helps Episcopal pin down comeback win

Paul McLaughlin’s pin over Westtown School’s Elisha Arauz in 2 minutes, 36 seconds Thursday made the difference for Episcopal Academy in a 42-36 nonleague win.

The Churchmen were playing from behind the entire way thanks to three straight Westtown pins at 120, 126 and 132. Alex Bendinelli’s major decision at 138 kicked off a stretch of seven EA wins in nine bouts.

Kevin Li followed with a major decision at

145, as did Frederick Greene at 170. Jesse BellTaylor needed just 23 seconds to secure a pin at 160, Evan Zanolli worked into the second period for his pin at 192 and Glay Yang needed

1:52 to get his opponents’ shoulders to the mat in the 195-pound bout.

Girls Swimming

Megan Le won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly and swam legs on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays to power Upper Darby to a 98-88 Central League win over Marple Newtown.

Emily Lehman won the 200 free for UD before taking part in the two winning free relays. Chloe Lam augmented triumphs in the 200 medley and 400 free relays by claiming the 100 backstroke.

Freshman Alexandra Pastris set a Marple Newtown record with her winning tally of 271.40 points in diving. Emily Reynolds backed her by winning the 50 and 100 free.

Boys Swimming

Sam Wesley won the 200 free and 100 free, and Ivan Puskovitch was victorious in the 200 free and 500 free as Episcopal Academy and Malvern Prep tied at 93 in an Inter-Ac meet.

Puskovitch’s 500 free time of 4:26.30 breaks his Delco record of 4:27.35 set last year. Cole Whitsett won the 50 free and 100 fly for the Churchmen. Whitsett and Wesley (medley, 200 free) and Puskovitch (medley, 400 free) each added two relay wins.

In the Central League:

MARPLE NEWTOWN 114, UPPER DARBY 71 >> Matthew Gray won the 200 free and 100 fly, Michael Hannig swept the 50 free and 100 back and Williams Thomas was victorious in the 200 IM and 100 breast for the Tigers. Demetri Tsitsios’ score of 223.30 took gold in diving. Upper Darby’s Kevyn Daly picked up a win in the 100 free.

Boys Bowling

Jake Hall topped out at a high game of 236 and a tallied a 550 series as Bonner & Prendergas­t downed Archbishop Wood, 3-1, in Catholic League action. Jason Ladley chipped in a 203 high game, and Will Nawn added a 201 game.

Girls Bowling

Maddie Gannon rolled a 233 high game and 545 series to pace Bonner & Prendergas­t’s 3-1 win over Archbishop Wood. Jayla Gary contribute­d a 170 high game.

Hockey

Alex Gattone’s goal 23 seconds into the third period proved to be the game-winner as Haverford skated by Springfiel­d, 5-3.

Andrew Daly scored twice, Quinn Hawley also lit the lamp and Jacob Orazi added a late insurance tally to augment an assist for the Fords. Tyler Cassidy made 27 saves.

Steven Griffin and Chad Ruppert gave Springfiel­d a 2-1 lead after one period but the Cougars couldn’t make it stand up.
