Officials check out new hardwood floor at Sulpizio Gym
During the extremely heavy rainstorm on Aug. 13, 2018, that flooded parts of Wayne, water rushed in from the north side of the building and ruined the hardwood floor that is used for basketball, pickle ball and other activities.
$297,591 in damage from that flood, including damage to the administration building and a districtowned truck, but insurance covered all but $39,039. Six private vehicles parked on school property also sustained flood damage that was not reimbursed by the district, said Michelle Diekow, business administrator.
School board members met with township officials in the gym to check out the $140,295 replacement floor that was completed Dec. 6.
Township Manager Robert Zienkowski pointed out places where the floor had small, raised areas in the finish. The company that installed the floor will be returning to fix it, he said.
Generations of Radnor children have used the gym. Facilities Committee Chairman Michael Miller remembered playing basketball there as a youngster. At one time, a tunnel connected Radnor Middle School to the gym, he said.
Part of the building is in need of a new roof, said Tammy Cohen, director of recreation and community programming. However, repairs were recently made to other sections of the roof where there were leaks. Also, the township cleaned out drainage pipes at the rear of the building that may have contributed to the flooding and added an additional pipe, she said.
Adults as well as children take part in programs at the gym, which the public can also rent for birthday parties and other festivities.
