100 Years Ago – 1919: Mrs. John Entwistle, of Third Street, had the misfortune to drop a handbag containing practically the entire week’s salary of her husband, while Mr. And Mrs. Entwistle were out for a walk yesterday. Mr. Entwistle is a hard-working man and can ill afford to lose the money.
The Madrid restaurant at
224 W. Third St. was raided late Saturday night by a cordon of police. Sixteen inmates were taken in the dragnet and were removed to the City Hall. The proprietor of the establishment is charged with selling wine without a license. A half barrel of wine was confiscated. It is understood that the wine was sold with the meals.
75 Years Ago – 1944: Major General Hubert R. Harmon, former U.S. Army detail at Pennsylvania Military College, has taken command of the 13th Air Force, operating as part of the Solomons Air Force in the southwest Pacific battle area, the Army announced today. Major Gen. Harmon was stationed at the local military school for four years, shortly after the Spanish War, as instructor in military science and tactics.
50 Years Ago – 1969: The takeover of Swarthmore College’s admissions office by a group of dissident black students went into its fourth day today as the group studied a list of faculty proposals, drafted by about 125 faculty and administration during a six-hour weekend session, to resolve the crisis. The group, the Swarthmore Afro-American Students’ Society, seized the admissions office Thursday in protest of the college’s admission policy for black prospective students and the lack of black students on police-making committees. 25 Years Ago – 1994: Brookhaven Council this week directed the borough solicitor to advertise a new ordinance that would rescind the present $50 permit fee that residents must pay to erect storm doors, storm windows, replacement windows, siding and new roofs. If approved, residents would still be required to apply for a permit, but no fee would be charged the homeowner. A permit ensures that the building inspector will inspect that the job was performed properly.
10 Years Ago – 2009: Two men have been charged in connection with a rash of burglaries near the Widener University campus. The investigation is continuing into what police say have been at least nine break-ins in the Sun Hill neighborhood, home to a number of Widener students. According to police, the suspects targeted the off-campus homes of students who were away on holiday break. The men, ages 20 and 18, are Sun Hill residents.
