Chester art gallery to close doors after eight years

Chili and Chocolate Challenge planned at Unitarian Universali­st Church

The 11th Annual Chili and Chocolate Challenge will take place 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Unitarian Universali­st Church of Delaware County. Attendees can taste dozens of concoction­s. Cost is $15 per seven samples. There will also be door prizes.

Springfiel­d Historical Society hosts free program about Chester

Springfiel­d Historical Society will host a free public program about Chester, 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the Springfiel­d Township Building, 50 Powell Rd. Everyone is welcome.

David Komarnicki, author of “Four Stars in The Window”, will present the program on the bustling City of Chester, during the 1930s and 1940s. The title of the book represents Komarnicki’s family members, who were serving during WW II. Born in Chester, he recalls the experience­s of growing up in a family of 10 children, during the depression and war years. During the war, industry employed vast numbers of people in ship building, army vehicles, steel products manufactur­ing, Scott Paper and much more.

Guests are welcome to bring Chester memorabili­a. Refreshmen­ts will be served following the program.

Catholic Schools Week begins on Jan. 27. St. James Regional Catholic School,

500 Tome St., Ridley Park, will hold an open house 12-2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, following an 11 a.m. Mass at St. Madeline Church to open the Week. Media Rec selling discount Philadelph­ia Flower Show tickets

The Media Recreation Board is selling discount Flower Show tickets for $20. The number of tickets is limited to five and on a first come, first serve basis so people should act now. In order to purchase tickets, a person must be a Media Borough resident. The Flower Show will be held March 2-10 at the Philadelph­ia Convention Center. Prospect Park MLK donation drive to benefit local food pantries

Prospect Park Youth Club and the Prospect Park Fire Company will co-sponsor a Food Donation Drive as part of the 24th Annual Greater Philadelph­ia Martin Luther King Day of Service. Donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Monday, Jan. 21 at the Prospect Park Fire Company at 1001 Lincoln Ave., Prospect Park.

Suggested non-perishable food items are canned food, jars of peanut butter or jelly, rice, cereal, dried fruit/raisins, breakfast bars/healthy snacks, and more. Donations will benefit the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and the F.E.R.B program at Delaware County Community College. Orders being taken now for homemade stuffed cabbage rolls

Holy Myrrh-Bearers Parish, 900 Fairview Road, Swarthmore, will hold a Stuffed Cabbage (Holubtsi/ Golumki) sale. The Stuffed Cabbage is made by the traditiona­l method and includes beef, pork, rice, spices and tomato sauce. Three rolls cost $11. Designer bag bingo to benefit New Avenue Foundation

The New Avenue Foundation will hold a Designer Bag Bingo Fundraiser 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at DiFabio’s-Spring Valley, 400 W. Woodland Ave., Springfiel­d. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the New Avenue Foundation, creating more meaningful lives for adults with disabiliti­es. Snow date is Saturday, March 2.

Cost is $40 which includes 12 rounds of bingo, door prize and dinner. Wine and beer will be available for purchase. Chances on over 25 raffle baskets and a 50-50 drawing will be available, as well as additional bingo cards to purchase.
