Nicholls helps La Salle finally earn conference win

It took until February, but the La Salle women’s basketball team finally found an Atlantic 10 Conference win with a 77-71 decision over Rhode Island.

The Explorers (4-20 overall, 1-9 A10) erased a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Rams (7-15, 2-8). Michelle Nicholls, a sophomore from New Zealand, led the way with a hot shooting night off the bench. She connected on three of her five three-point attempts and went 7-for-11 from the field overall for a team-high 23 points.

Sofilia Ngwafang also turned in a strong effort in reserve, chipping in 18 points. Kayla Spruill had eight points and Shalina Miller, a Bonner & Prendergas­t grad and All-Delco, finished with seven points and six boards.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 66, DAVIDSON 54 >> Kristalyn Baisden matched her career-high with 23 points, lifting the Hawks to a come-frombehind win. Down by 14 points early in the third quarter, the Hawks closed out the game by outscoring the Wildcats 27-6 in the fourth quarter to improve to 7-15 on the season and 3-6 in Atlantic 10 play.

Baisden, whose previous high of 23 points was set at Dayton in January, went 9-for-15 from the floor, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, while handing out a team-high four assists. Alyssa Monaghan (Bonner & Prendergas­t, All-Delco) added

18 points and four rebounds, while redshirt freshman Katie Jekot finished with

11 points and five rebounds.

CABRINI 74, WESLEY COLLEGE 54>> Make it eight straight wins for the Cavaliers (14-8,

8-1 Atlantic East).

They traveled to Dover and kept the host Wolverines (5-17, 0-9) winless in the Atlantic East conference. Meghan Matthews was a force at both ends of the court for Cabrini, pulling down 12 rebounds to go with her game-high 20 points. The Philadelph­ia native also contribute­d two steals and blocked two shots in the win.

Sun Valley product Kate Lannon added

15 points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block. Ashley Tutzauer came off the bench to get 15 points. EASTERN 57, FDU-FLORHAM 46 >> The Eagles closed the first quarter on a 15-0 run to pull away from the host Devils (7-15, 2-9 MAC Freedom) early and extend their winning streak to four games.

Eastern (9-13, 4-7) led by as many as 22 in the contest.

Sophomore Minika Glenn, a NeumannGor­etti product, had a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 13 rebounds. MARYWOOD 70, NEUMANN 69>> This Atlantic East nail-biter came down to the final seconds. With 25 seconds remaining, the Knights’ Jaylin Ortiz hit a layup to tie the game at 69. But the deadlock was shortlived. Cara Romaniello hit a free throw to give the Pacers (10-12, 5-5 Atlantic East) a late lead and eventually the win.

Nafisa Saunders had a monster night for Neumann (12-10, 5-5) in defeat. She scored 31 points, including a 12-for-14 effort from the charity stripe.

Men’s

Mike Bowlers’ free throw with 84 seconds left in regulation gave Eastern the final point in a 61-60 win over FDU-Florham.

FDU-Florham’s Andy Flerantin bricked a

3-pointer as time expired. The win moved Eastern to 14-8 and 8-3 in the MAC Freedom.

Bowler led the way with 17 points and

11 rebounds for the Eagles, who trailed by seven points at intermissi­on. Darius Washington collected 16 points, five rebounds and four steals for the victors, while Marquise Peel tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.

Eastern dominated the battle on the boards, 51-31.

NEUMANN 84, MARYWOOD 76 >> Waheem Lowman tallied a game-high 21, powering the Knights (11-12) to just their second win in the Atlantic East. Jordan Collins had 20 points in a reserve role, while Raquan Brown-Johnson had 11 points and nine assists. SWARTHMORE 73, JOHNS HOPKINS 55 >> The No. 14 Garnet (19-3, 12-3 Centennial Conference) claimed their fifth straight win behind a balanced scoring effort. Zac O’Dell poured in 16 points and Cam Wiley collected 15 points and seven rebounds. George Visconti chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.

MUHLENBERG 67, HAVERFORD 64 >> The Fords (9-13, 5-10 Centennial) jumped out to a 21-3 lead 10 minutes in, but the host Mules chipped away and scored the final nine points of regulation to hand Haverford a dreadful late-season defeat.

Joe Scibelli scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in the losing effort. Fellow senior Kahlil Garnes lit up from long distance during the opening half and finished with 18 points, while Jesse Turkson also added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Muhlenberg had four players finish in double figures, including 24 points to match Scibelli from Matt Gnias off the Mules’ bench. WESLEY 105, CABRINI 98 >> The Cavaliers had two 30-point performanc­es, yet found a way to lose for the 17th time this season.

Voshon Mack poured in 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Anthony Wright-Downing netted 30 points to go with seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Alsmith Saintilus added 16 points.
