A Chester police investigator documents spent shell casing in the street after a shooting on the 700 block of Pennell Street just after 1 p.m. Monday. It was the city and county’s first homicide of 2019.

>> An 18-year-old city man succumbed to his injuries after being shot on a street not far from his home Monday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Yahmire Curry, was pronounced dead at Crozer-Chester Medical Center about 2:30 p.m., some 90 minutes after the shooting was reported, according to city Police Chief James Nolan IV.

Curry’s death marks the first homicide for Delaware County in 2019.

“It is very early in the investigation, and we are questioning several people at this time,” Nolan said as he confirmed the fatal shooting. Based on preliminary information, the victim was walking in the 700 block of Pennell Street, not far from his residence.

“Both the victim and the shooter were on foot … Quite a few shots were fired. There may have been an exchange of gunfire, we’re looking into it,” Nolan said. “As to the ‘why’ this happened, that’s still very much up in the air.”

Following numerous 911 reports, police responded to the scene about 1:03 p.m., according to Nolan. As officers were arriving, the victim was already being transported to Crozer by a private vehicle. Investigators followed the vehicle to Crozer’s emergency department.

According to Nolan, Curry suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was in surgery when he died.

The victim just turned 18 in November, he noted.
