Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1919:
From the Times Editorial Board: The deadlock in city council over the appointment of a chief of police is most unfortunate, and the “exercises” attending the meeting of last Monday are still a disgrace and a nightmare to the city of Chester. Three members of council forgot their duty to their constituents, defied the mayor, threw reason to the winds, and voted down the name of one of Chester’s best citizens ... as a member of the police force. There is no parallel to this on record, and it was undoubtedly premeditated.
75 Years Ago – 1944:
Chester is “over the top” in the Fourth War Loan! The $12,000,000 War Bond goal was reached at 2:45 p.m. Friday. Once more Chester and its surrounding communities of Eddystone, Brookhaven, Upland, Trainer, Linwood, Marcus Hook and Boothwyn became the first of Pennsylvania’s major city areas to make the War Bond quota.
50 Years Ago – 1969:
A zoning change hearing for controversial parcels of ground near Baltimore Pike and East Woodland Avenue will be conducted later this month by Springfield commissioners. The board will discuss a rezoning request for the former Palm Beach Swim Club and two adjacent residential properties along East Woodland Avenue to allow commercial development. An agency for Thriftway Food of King of Prussia has requested the change.
25 Years Ago – 1994:
Amid widespread reports he really was running for state attorney general in
1996 all along, Delaware County District Attorney Bill Ryan ended his campaign for this year’s Republican nomination for U.S. senator. Ryan told GOP state committee members meeting in Harrisburg to consider endorsements for three statewide elections that he was pulling out of his Senate bid in “the interests of party unity.” The withdrawal leaves the field largely to the endorsed candidate, U.S. Rep. Rick Santorum of Pittsburgh.
10 Years Ago – 2009:
A new chapter is unfolding in the saga of the Darby Free Library. Billed as the oldest continually operating public library in the United States – and with a pedigree dating back to 1743 – the library is facing financial difficulties that may put it out of business by the end of 2009. But thanks to an influx of donations from well-wishers as far away as Salem, Wash., Texas and Alaska, the library has received more than $3,000 to put toward its goal of remaining operational into
2010.
