Coaxum leaps to double gold at Meet of Champs
Garnet Valley’s Larry Coaxum is peaking at the right time. The senior from Garnet Valley turned in another terrific performance Saturday, winning the long and triple jumps at the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia Meet of Champions.
Coaxum leaped 22 feet, 2 inches to win the long jump and 46-2 to claim gold in the triple jump. He wasn’t the only county athlete to come home with a pair of individual medals.
Daiyaan Hawkins and Dan Whaley from Haverford School, and Tayvon Williams from Penn Wood also earned two individual medals each. Hawkins took third in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the
200. Whaley was third in the 200 and fourth in the
400. They weren’t the only Fords to come home with hardware: Lleyton Winslow was fourth in the 800 and Petey Lemmon was fifth in the shot put.
Williams placed fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 43-6 ½ and was sixth in the long jump. Penn Wood also took fourth in the 4 x 200.
Ethan Rigby, Brendan Luong, Patrick Theveny and Andrew Woolery from Penncrest won the distance medley relay (10:46.03), just ahead of Garnet Valley (10:47.10).
Haverford High had a solid day. Mike Donnelly was fourth in the mile. Chasen Wint took sixth in the shot put, and the Fords were second in the 4 x 800.
Gbarwho Flahn of Upper Darby placed third in the 400, and the Royals were third in the 4 x 400. Malachi Langley of Chester placed fifth in the 400. Garnet Valley’s Chris Rudawsky was fifth in the 800.
Girls Track
A terrific season got a little better for Upper Darby’s Kayla Thorpe and Olivia Thomas. Thorpe and Thomas turned in the best performances of their careers Friday night to take first and fourth in the shot put, respectively, at the Delaware Valley Girls Track and Field Coaches Association Meet of Champions at Lehigh.
Thorpe put the shot 41-1 to take the gold. Thomas had a best throw of 3910. Teammate Dominique Timmons took fourth in the 60.
Penn Wood’s Elicia Moore was the only other individual winner from Delco. She was first in the 400 (58.00). The Patriots also took third in the 4 x 200 and fourth in the 4 x 400.
Strath Haven won the DMR (12:13.41) and was second in the 4 x 800. Notre Dame’s Jessica Schneider took second in the 3,000 and the Irish were second to Strath Haven in the DMR.
Ridley had a pair of individual medal winners. Meghan Lynch was third in the triple jump, and Brianna Foster took fourth in the 200. Grace Zamrowski of Garnet Valley was third in the 400, with Chester’s Jiya Clayton sixth. Haverford’s Olivia Boyce took second in the high jump.
Wrestling
Back-to-back pins by Chris Wood and Griffin Hollingsworth helped Garnet Valley knock off host Downingtown West, 45-32, in the championship match at the Downingtown West Quad meet.
The Jaguars were protecting a 33-32 lead when Wood pinned Mateusz Suchecki in 26 seconds at 113 pounds to clinch the victory. Hollingsworth put Ethan Niemeyer on his back in 4:53 at 120 pounds to end the match.
Hollingsworth, his brother Gavin (138), Kevin Puliti (126), Desmon Perry
(145 and 152), Austin Filippone (160) and Coltin Deery
(285) all went 3-0, while Wood, Matt Ricci (106), Eric Nickson and Joe Morrone (220) all were 2-1. Garnet Valley defeated Coatesville, 66-13, and C.B. East, 65-18, to reach the final.
Chichester bounced back after falling to Downingtown West (49-18) and C.B. East (41-34) to place fifth with a 54-16 win over Harriton. Chase Whartnaby

(160) both went 3-0 for the Eagles, while Tymir Bush was 2-1.
