Delco Black Caucus backs Dems for countywide offices
CHESTER >> The newly formed Delco Black Caucus PAC presented its first slate of endorsed primary candidates for countywide offices on Saturday. Caucus Chairman and city Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland and the executive committee made the announcement at a noon event at the Soul Street Lounge in the 500 block of Avenue of the States.
The caucus’ endorsed candidates for the Democratic primary are: Jack Stollsteimer, district attorney; Nusrat Rashid, William “Al” Jacobs, Stephanie Klein and Kelly Eckel; Common Pleas Court judge; and Tinu Moss, Richard Womack, Elaine Schaefer, county council. According to Kirkland, there was no response from GOP officials for participation in the endorsement process.
“We believe our endorsed slate of candidates represent a balanced, diverse ticket of highly qualified individuals, who not only submitted their applications before the deadline, but also conducted strong interviews with the executive committee of the PAC,” Kirkland stated in a press release. “These candidates… highlighted a strong commitment to supporting the mission and values of the caucus which includes a strong desire to improve the quality of life for black constituents who reside in Delaware County.”
The endorsements are the first from the Delco Black Caucus PAC since its formal establishment in December 2018 by members of the Delaware County Black Caucus. Its current 50 members – which it hopes to expand to 75 with a March membership drive – are representative of the countywide black population, according to Kirkland.
“I think our interests are basically the same – education, better opportunity for African-American kids,” Kirkland said by phone Monday. “I think our needs are the same when we’re talking about a safer community for all of residents, when we’re looking for opportunities for job creation, employment. Now we’re standing in a collective voice rather than separate in our efforts.”
