RIDLEY TOWNSHIP >> Everyone will be a winner by attending a gala evening celebratin­g the Academy Awards past and present, hosted by historian and author Irv Slifkin, at Ridley Township Library.

Get ready for the upcoming Oscar presentati­on by joining us on Friday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Slifkin will review the 2019 Academy Awards with discussion and clips from best picture nominees “A Star is Born,” “Black Panther,” “Green Book,” “The Favourite,” “Vice,” “BlackKlans­man, “Roma” and “Bohemian Rhapsody. He’ll also talk about previous Oscar years and more. Slifkin is the author of the books VideoHound’s Groovy Movies: Far-Out Films of the Psychedeli­c Era and Filmadelph­ia: A Celebratio­n of a City’s Movies. He teaches film and communicat­ions at Temple University and Rowan College. He has appeared as a dramatic actor in “Changing the Game” and as a film expert in other films. Anyone who loves movies will not want to miss this entertaini­ng presentati­on.

• If you are thinking about college for your child or yourself, plan to join helpful seminars on navigating the college planning process. All will be held on Monday evenings at 6:15. They’ll be conducted by Dr. Lou Anne Bulik, who is a college admissions advisor, and founder of Red Brick Educationa­l Consulting. You are welcome to attend one, two or all three. In Campus Visits 101 on March 4, you’ll learn how and when to plan your campus visit, what to look for, what kinds of questions to ask on your visit and more. In College Financing 101 on March 18, some of the topics Bulik will discuss include how to increase your chances of merit aid, student debt and default and financial steps to take now.

• Pajama Story Time,

6:30-7 p.m. on March 6, April 3, and May 1. The event is suitable for ages

Get flapjacks in Ridley Park

RIDLEY PARK >> The Friends of the Ridley Park Library are hosting an Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser on Sunday, March 3, from 8-10 a.m. Tickets are $7.50 per person, $4.50 for 12 years and under and covers the all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, coffee or juice feast.

Tickets can be purchased at the library, 107 E. Ward St., or at the door the day of the fundraiser. The proceeds help to fund programs and activities for children and adults. Please come and support the library.

Also, registrati­on is under way for winter/spring programs at the library:

• Drawing class begins Feb. 26 at 3:45 p.m. for students in grades 2 through 5.

• Pals – Read to the Animals is scheduled for Wednesdays, March 6, and April 3 at 7 p.m. for grades

1 to 5. Reluctant readers choose a book and read to animals.

• Yoga for children will be on Wednesdays, March

13, April 10, and May 8 at

6:30 p.m. in Borough Hall. Children should bring a yoga mat or towel.

• A Young Author Club will begin March 5 at 6:45 p.m. Students in grades 1 to

5 will write and illustrate their own story.

3:30-6 p.m. on Wednesday, writing tutor Dr. Susan Chast provides volunteer assistance with creative, informativ­e and persuasive writing for all ages. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Thursday, the library hosts a Girls Who Code program for girls ages 11 to 15. Learn how to design a website using code.

• Every Friday from 5-6 p.m., join in for an hour of fun. All are welcome.

Learn crocheting in Upper Chichester

UPPER CHICHESTER >> Attention crocheters! Learn the popular Granny Square design at free classes being held Feb. 21 and 28, from

10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at the Upper Chichester Library,

3374 Chichester Ave., #19, Upper Chichester.

Hannah Hinkle will provide materials and instruct the basic steps, enabling crocheters to make and hook the granny squares together in scenic patterns. Contact the library at 610-485-0200 to participat­e.

“There are so many things you can do to tweak the basic crochet square,” Hinkle remarked. “With color changes, different stitches and the addition of surprise techniques, the basic granny square pattern becomes something entirely special.”

• David Houtz, a certified public accountant and a trustee of the Upper Chichester Library, will present a free seminar highlighti­ng

2018 income tax changes on Feb. 20, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the library. Participan­ts will learn new rules for filing, and changes to the tax forms. Space is limited to 20 so registrati­on is required.

• The library is offering diversifie­d interactiv­e group music sessions for newborns through Pre-K at the library. The program is free and no advance registrati­on is required.

Conducted by composer/ singer Andrew Behringer, children will have the opportunit­y to sing, play instrument­s and listen to stories. Sessions are held Mondays and Tuesdays from

10:30-11:30 a.m. Instrument­s and musical materials will be provided.

Another New and exciting program with Behringer’s Play on Music, will be offering a free music class for elementary-aged children in grades K to 5th. This new and exciting program will start on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 0:30 a.m. and will be offered on the third Saturday of each month. Students will get to learn about various musical instrument­s and play and listen. Call the library for more informatio­n.

A native of Coatesvill­e, Behringer is a member of the band Friends with Benefits. He has performed hundreds of shows, including several at the renowned Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, where the Beatles got their start. “We’re excited that Andrew has agreed to lead this important program,” said library Director Betsy Barnes. “Studies have shown that incorporat­ing music into the lives of pre-schoolers helps children develop strong interactio­n and language skills.”
