1. New England belonged to several Algonquian tribes, and I bet you can nameoneoft­hetwofrom Connecticu­t that are federally recognized, since they now have casinos.

2. This English explorer - who was voiced by Mel Gibson in one of Disney’s insults to historical accuracy - coined the name “New England,” and now his name is America’s most common.

3. The New England Confederat­ion gave the region its first shape, but that shape kept shifting, and for a time New England included New Scotland, aka this Canadian province.

4. In 1791, Vermont became the 14th state in the Union and fifth in New England, thanks to this philosophi­cal tough guy who’s now synonymous with Vermont and furniture.

5. In 1820, Maine became the 23rd state in the Union and sixth in New England, and since the ad said Pets OK, it moved in with this namesake native cat.
