Saint Joe’s Monaghan adds another couple of honors

Alyssa Monaghan is having a senior season at Saint Joseph’s to remember.

The 2014-15 Daily Times Player of the Year from Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergas­t picked up two more weekly honors Monday. She was named Big 5 women’s basketball Player of the Week for the second week in a row and third time this season and earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors for the second time. She shared the A-10 award with Jordan Franz of Saint Louis.

Monaghan averaged 23.5 points, four rebounds and

2.5 assists in wins over Massachuse­tts and La Salle. She scored a career-high 27 points in the victory over the Explorers and shot 46.4 percent from the floor overall (13for-28) and 50 percent from

3-point range (7-for-14) in the two games.

Monaghan also earned Big

5 honors on Jan. 14 and was lauded by the A-10 on Jan. 21.

Temple’s Shizz Alston and Penn’s A.J. Brodeur shared Big 5 Player of the Week honors on the men’s side. Alston, an All-Delco from The Haverford School, averaged 26 points, 5.5 assists and five rebounds in wins over SMU and South Florida. He scored 28 points against SMU, including 13 straight and 15 of 18 in a key stretch for the Owls.

Brodeur averaged 29.5 points and seven rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Quakers, and shot 62 percent from the field. Brodeur scored 36 points in an overtime victory over Dartmouth, the most by a Penn player since 1995. He added 23 points in an overtime loss to Harvard.

Elsewhere, Villanova’s Saddiq Bey was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career. The 6-8 forward had six points and six rebounds to help the Wildcats edge Creighton in overtime and added 11 points and five boards in Sunday’s loss to St. John’s. He is averaging 8.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
