75 Years Ago – 1944:

The parks and drives and even a few swimming pools in Delaware County were points of destination for thousands who sought the outdoors Sunday as spring continued to deliver an exemplary record of bright sunshine and warm temperatures. It was the largest exodus of weekend pleasure seekers yet to crowd the highways this spring, and more automobiles were in evidence than at any time since gasoline rationing has been in effect. 50 Years Ago – 1969: The Pennsylvania Crime Commission has “insufficient evidence” to warrant the arrest of any of the alleged Mafia leaders in Delaware County, District Attorney Stephen J. McEwen Jr. said. McEwen refused to disclose the names of the persons the crime commission contends are directing underworld operations in the county, saying he will not “deal in sensationalism.”

25 Years Ago – 1994:

A potential Commonwealth Court decision favoring Delilah’s Dolls, the “”gentleman’s club’’ that has featured topless dancers since it opened last February on the Conchester Highway, may defuse the power of the Upper Chichester Zoning Board, said township Solicitor James Proud. The club, which was closed for a month, was allowed by Senior Commonwealth Court Judge Silvestri Silvestri to reopen in March pending the zoning board’s decision. Silvestri reasoned that Upper Chichester officials did not have to seek a bond and there was no way for Delilah’s to recoup its losses should the club owners win the approval of the zoning board.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Results of a Chester High School student survey, conducted as part of a periodic Middle States school accreditation process, have been quietly circulating among some community members well before their official release. “I’m going to shut it down real tight right now because I don’t want to hurt the process,” said Superintendent Gregory Thornton, who has yet to see the results of the survey taken by 653 on the school’s climate, mission, administration, educational programs and resources. But Delores Wright, internal coordinator for the Middle States process and a teacher at the high school, said there was little cause for concern.
