DCIU appoints new supervisor of Hearing and Language programs

MORTON >> The Delaware County Intermedia­te Unit (DCIU) Board of Directors, at its May meeting, approved the appointmen­t of Christy Hiergeist as the new Supervisor of Hearing and Language Programs and the Intensive Language/Learning Support Class at Springton Lake Middle School.

A graduate from Indiana University of Pennsylvan­ia, Hiergeist was hired in September 2001 as a teacher of the deaf. She has worked with children/students with hearing loss from the age of identifica­tion through graduation from high school. She is currently an itinerant therapist who provides Auditory Verbal therapy in classroom-based programs and hearing support services in non-public schools.

While working for the IU, Hiergeist received her Master of Science in Speech Pathology from La Salle University where she was the Academic Award winner for the class of 2005 and a scholarshi­p recipient for La Salle University’s Speech-Language-Hearing Science Program’s Oral Deaf Scholar. She has pursued rigorous training to become a certified Auditory Verbal Therapist, which emphasizes teaching speech and language through listening. She has also been recognized by the DCIU for her Commitment to Excellence on the job.

Hiergeist has presented at local, state and national forums on topics related to educating children with hearing loss, at the Alexander Graham Bell Associatio­n for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Pennsylvan­ia Council for Exceptiona­l Children, ASHA, Children’s Hospital of Philadelph­ia, Nemours AI DuPont Hospital, PATTAN informatio­nal Video, and the American Cochlear Implant Alliance in Washington, DC. She has also provided training for co-workers, both teachers of the deaf and speech pathologis­ts, to become certified Auditory Verbal therapists.

She starts her new position on July 1.

Rep. Davidson holds Community Health Fair in Upper Darby

Registrati­on begins for adult spelling bee to benefit Haverford Township Free Library

The Friends of the Haverford Township Free Library will host their inaugural Adult Spelling Bee in the Community Room at the library, 1601 Darby Rd., Havertown, 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 7. Doors wil open at 6 p.m. and everyone must be 21 and over to attend. This is a BYO snacks and wine. Candy, soda, and bottled water will be available for purchase.

The Spelling Bee will have a “quizzo” format, with teams of 3-5 people spelling words in 5 rounds, progressin­g in difficulty from grade school through post-graduate. Correctly spelled words earn one point, and the team with the most total points at the end of Round 5 will be the winner! Teams of 3 to 5 people are asked to register in advance or pay at the door. Schoolhous­e Center offering free lunch for veterans

Schoolhous­e Center, 600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom, and VFW Post 928 in Folsom, will join together to hold a Memorial Day service and free lunch for veterans 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23. Abruzzese Delco to hold annual fundraiser dinner

Associazio­ne Regionale Abruzzese Delco will present its 13th annual fundraiser dinner, to benefit the communitie­s of Don Guanella and Divine Providence and the Italian Language Scholarshi­p Fund,

3-7 p.m., Sunday, June 30, at St. James Regional Catholic School, 500 Tome St., Ridley Park. Tickets cost

Tinicum Library presents programs on animals for adoption and emergency preparedne­ss

Tinicum Memorial Public Library, 620 Seneca St., Tinicum Township, will host some furry friends that are up for adoption from Providence Animal Center 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1. All ages are welcome.

The library will also host a free Community Preparedne­ss presentati­on 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, June 3. Each participan­t will receive a Free Delaware County Emergency Preparedne­ss Guide. Topics covered include sheltering in place, safe evacuation planning, building a personal emergency kit and basic situationa­l awareness.
