100 Years Ago – 1919: A fire believed to be due to a bolt of lightning completely destroyed a three-story stone barn and all its contents on the dairy farm of George W. West, at Ridley Heights last evening, including 60 tons of hay and all of this year’s harvest of grain with the exception of the wheat crop, which has not yet ripened. It entails a total loss of approximat­ely

$12,000. The building was protected by only a small amount of insurance.

75 Years Ago – 1944: A Parkside engineer officer who went through the first hours of bitter fighting on the beaches of Normandy on June 6 spoke quite modestly of his deeds in a broadcast from London Wednesday night. He said simply that he helped clear “obstacles, mines and pillboxes” from the beach. It sounded easy the way

50 Years Ago – 1969: Plans for a twin-towered

600-room Holiday Inn to be built near the Philadelph­ia Internatio­nal Airport, Essington, have been unveiled by a Media builder. The

26-story inn is the second large motor inn currently planned for the county. A $1.5-million Howard Johnson Motor Lodge and restaurant have been approved for constructi­on at

14th Street and Providence Avenue in Chester’s Smedley Urban Renewal area.

25 Years Ago – 1994: Upper Darby police arrested a

16-year-old Drexel Hill teen on charges of threatenin­g two men with a handgun Sunday night at the Bond Avenue playground. Meanwhile, another call of a man with a gun was received in the 900 block of Fairfax Road. A juvenile was apprehende­d and subsequent­ly charged with the earlier incident,. Two handguns were recovered during the investigat­ion. 10 Years Ago – 2009: When the stars come out on Wednesday nights in Media, so do the diners. But so do those who just enjoy strolling down State Street in what has become the second “Dining Under the Stars” this summer. This year, the outside tables have been expanded and Corvettes have been rolled in to fill the space between the various restaurant­s’ tables. Monika Rehoric of Kenny’s Flower Shoppe, president of the Media Business Authority, said the approach was to give Media a relaxed, European feel with the street closed down.
