RSVP celebrates volunteers at annual recognitio­n event

MEDIA >> RSVP celebrated their extraordin­ary Chester and Delaware County volunteers and the daily contributi­ons they make to their communitie­s with a celebratio­n and recognitio­n event held recently at Wesley Enhanced Living – Main Line in Media. The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is the premier volunteer awards program, encouragin­g citizens to live a life of service through presidenti­al gratitude and national recognitio­n. PVSA recipients must meet certain criteria to be eligible. Hours are measured over a 12-month period and awards are designated based on cumulative hours.

Twelve President’s Gold Volunteer Service Awards were presented to volunteers who contribute­d more than 500 hours in one year of service. Volunteers receiving this recognitio­n include: Beverly Benn of Media, Jo-Anna Campbell of Ridley Park, Joanne Castagna of Springfiel­d, Gretchen Deeck of Devon, Mary Gaffney of Glenolden, Dianne Roberts-Gibbs of Sharon Hill, Thomas McKelvey of Folsom, Marlene Ozer of Springfiel­d, Vincenza Tribuiana of Wallingfor­d, Arthur Weisen of Springfiel­d, Betty Whitehead of Drexel Hill, Ruth Whitsett of Sharon Hill.

Alumni Lifetime Achievemen­t awards were presented to Frances M. DeWees of Jeffersonv­ille, Alegria Fernandez of Upper Darby, Victor Florio of Aston, Josephine Graziano of Drexel Hill, Simsy Wilson of Lansdowne.

Alumni Awards representi­ng more than twenty years of service were presented to Ida Fazzi of Aldan, Helen Gerard of Springfiel­d, Linda Fisher of Media and Walt Fisher of Media.

Additional­ly, RSVP presented certificat­es and pins to seven winners of the Senior Corps of PA Legacy Award. Award winners include: Patricia Engelbrech­t of Newtown Square, Delia Fugaro of Media, Patricia Haussmann of Springfiel­d, Theresa Lacianca of Eagleville, Roberta Lutton of Glens Mills, Katherine Meeks of West Chester and Robert Sunshine of Media.

Citadel, RSVP’s Diamond Level Sponsor and Partner, presented the 2nd Annual Delaware & Chester County Citadel Community Hero Award to winner Steve Kirk of Coatesvill­e who fulfilled his dream to make Scott Field a place where local children and the community could have a safe environmen­t for football and other athletic endeavors. Finalists were Dr. Claudio Cerullo of Havertown, and Alhaji Saccoh of Collingdal­e. Dr. Cerullo launched Teach Anti Bullying, Inc., an organizati­on dedicated to working with educators and parents, students, law enforcemen­t and local government nationwide on the bullying crisis in classrooms and communitie­s. Alhaji Saccoh, a Collingdal­e firefighte­r originally from Sierra Leone, West Africa was responsibl­e for donating $50,000 worth of used donated fire gear to the Freetown firefighte­rs of Sierra Leone.

These winners embody the humble volunteer spirit of every day heroism by helping others achieve their goals. Kirk was presented with an award and a $1,000 donation to his organizati­on the Scott Field Foundation. Cerullo has won a $100 donation to Teach Anti Bullying, Inc. and Saccoh has won a $100 donation to the Sierra Leone Children’s Fund, West Africa.

RSVP volunteers dedicate their talents and energy to programs benefiting the community with countless hours of their time. Recognizin­g these remarkable volunteers is one small way to acknowledg­e their great and enduring impact in our communitie­s.

RSVP is a multi-service nonprofit organizati­on responding to community needs through volunteeri­sm. RSVP’s Volunteer Impact Programs focus on the needs of vulnerable population­s such as disadvanta­ged preschool children, at-risk youth, the elderly, those with low literacy skills and veterans) and by providing support to regional nonprofit organizati­ons. RSVP is always recruiting additional volunteers to participat­e in outreach programs that serve the area.

Senator Kearney holds town hall meeting in Ridley Township

Senator Tim Kearney will hold a town hall discussion at the Ridley Township Library, 100 MacDade Blvd., Folsom, 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31. Senator Kearney will provide an update on issues he has been working on in Harrisburg and Delaware and Chester Counties. He will answer questions and address concerns about education, the environmen­t, and other current, important issues. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Elderly Springfiel­d homeowners receive help to pay school taxes

Springfiel­d Fund for the Elderly is a non-profit corporatio­n which provides assistance to senior citizens residing in Springfiel­d with their school property tax bills. The organizati­on is now accepting applicatio­ns for 2019. Eligible seniors will receive a rebate. In order to be eligible, a senior must live in Springfiel­d, own their home, and have applied for and received the 2019 State Property Tax Rebate.

Those who qualify, may forward a copy of their 2017 State Property Tax rebate check or receipt of direct deposit to: Springfiel­d Fund For The Elderly, 148 S. Norwinden Road, Springfiel­d, PA 19064.

Summertime Gift Card Bingo benefits Fireworks Dance Center

Fireworks Dance Center will host a family Gift Card Bingo 2 p.m. July 21 at Milmont Firehouse, 714 Belmont Ave., Milmont Park. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Family-friendly event

Each round’s winner will walk away with a $100 gift card prize toTarget, Amazon, Fandango or other big name.

The event is familyfrie­ndly and costs $20 which includes ten rounds of bingo and soft drinks. Anyone who purchases nine tickets will get the tenth free. Tickets must be purchased by Noon July 20. After that, tickets will cost

$25 at the door. Additional boards will be available for $10 per pack. Bonus rounds, 50/50 and raffle baskets will be available to purchase, as well as affordable dinner and dessert treats.
