100 Years Ago – 1919: A war on property owners who are raising rents in the Tenth Ward has been started. Citizens of the ward, particular­ly in the vicinity of Second and Reaney streets, are banding together and a mass meeting is proposed and the high rent question will be taken up. According to Frank P. Sheiber, of 125 Reaney St., a number of houses have been sold in that vicinity recently, including the one that he and his family live in, with prices asking prices rising to $2,800 from $2,000. Rents have risen between $6 to $8 more per month.

75 Years Ago – 1944: A 48-year-old ex-Chester man has been arrested in St. Louis and is being held for local authoritie­s in the armed holdup and kidnapping of a city physician five years ago. The man has been wanted by Chester police since Sept 30,

1939, when Dr. Harry A. Gallagher was held up and robbed for $51 in his office at 504 W. Seventh St., then forced to drive the bandit around in his car for more than two hours.

50 Years Ago – 1969: Darby Township Commission­ers authorized Solicitor Edward A. Savastio to seek informatio­n regarding a possible state takeover of township police protection. The reason, according to Board Vice President Edward J. (Ted) Dolan, is “the complete standstill” in the commission’s contract negotiatio­ns with the local force the Fraternal Order of Police. Negotiatio­ns broke off after deadlock over demands for raising the patrolmen’s starting salary from $6,350 to $8,500.

25 Years Ago – 1994: Parking spaces on Park Avenue are at a premium in the Millbourne Borough – something officials hope to address with an on-site exchange between residents and a businessma­n. One side of Park Avenue is lined with several apartment units with tenants owning an estimated 17 vehicles. The east side of the street is comprised of the borough hall, firehouse and police station and one business, Perzan Auto Radio, a thriving car radio installati­on company. Complaints of parking problems along the street have been aired by residents, who have vied for parking spots with customers of Perzan for many months.

10 Years Ago – 2009: An anonymous donor is covering the costs of veterinary bills for a kitten that was shot with a BB gun in Chester last month. SPCA Director of Developmen­t Fran Franchi said bills for the kitten, named Tiger Lilly by its adoptive family, cost the SPCA

$600. A woman who followed the story donated $1,000in honor of her two dogs that died in June.
