‘Wizard of Oz’ on stage at Neumann University
Center Stage Productions celebrates the 80th anniversary of the MGM classic “The Wizard of Oz” with performances Aug. 15-18 at Neumann University.
Dorothy Gale is whisked over the rainbow by a terrible twister and discovers she is in a magical land called Oz. There she finds strange wonders, new friends, and scary new adversaries as she tries to find her way back home. The stage show is a faithful adaptation of the 1939 film starring Judy Garland.
Center Stage Productions is a part of the Arts Guild at Neumann University. The Arts Guild was established in 1991 to enhance the cultural enrichment presented to the Delaware Valley Community. The eight-member organizations – Center Stage Productions, the Cultural Arts Forum, the Delaware County Symphony, International Ballet Classique, the Neumann University Arts Gallery, the Neumann University Concert Chorale, the Neumann University Jazz Band and the Neumann University Players—offer performances and seminars in the Fred P. Meagher Theatre.
Performances run Thursday, Aug. 15, Friday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Fred P. Meagher Theatre in the Thomas A. Bruder Jr. Life Center. General admission is $20. Art exhibit Sept 1 in Swarthmore
An exhibition of original photographs by artist Jay Ressler will be on display from through Sept. 1 at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Avenue, Swarthmore. Both the exhibit and the opening are free, kid-friendly and open to the public.
The artist is a native of Berks County. He graduated from Albright College with a degree in psychology and afterward relocated to Pittsburgh, working as a coal miner and later as a foundry machinist. He was very active in the arts, participating as a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and serving as a board member for the Pittsburgh Society of Artists.
As a digital photographer, Mr. Ressler creates intriguing composite photographic images. This exhibition offers a set of contemplative rural photographs, evoking a sense of somber reflection into our countryside history.

Queen Tribute Band to rock out on Aug. 24

Schoolhouse Rock Live begins Saturday at the Players Club
The Players Club of Swarthmore will present “Schoolhouse Rock Live” Saturday, Aug. 10- Sunday, Aug. 18. Schoolhouse Rock Live, a pop culture phenomenon takes the stage at The Players Club of Swarthmore’s Children’s Series. Based on the hit Saturday morning cartoon series seen on ABC-TV throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, Schoolhouse Rock Live teaches history, grammar, math, and more to a whole new generation.
Academic subjects will never seem boring again when presented through megahits like “Conjunction Junction,” “Just a Bill,” “Interplanet Janet” or “Three is a Magic Number.” The show is directed by Jason Boyer. Music director is Dan
Matarazzo and choreographer is Caitlin Naylor.

Gardeners wanted to enter Longwood Flower Show
Six local Garden Clubs, members of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, are sponsoring an NGC Standard Flower Show at Longwood Gardens. The show titled “Dancing Among The Flowers” will have dance themes represented in the designs. The show will be staged in the Ballroom at Longwood Gardens, featuring horticultural specimens, along with innovative floral arrangements, artistic crafts, and youth division.
The event included with Longwood admission, is open to the public 1-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.
The clubs planning the show under the auspices of Longwood Gardens, include Elverson Garden Club, Four Seasons Garden Club of Kennett Square, Garden Class of the Woman’s Community Club of Uwchlan, Spade and Trowel Club, Garden Club of Springfield and The Country Gardeners. The clubs hope to introduce the public to new and different horticultural experiences, in addition to exciting and beautiful means of displaying horticulture in floral design. Gardeners and floral arrangers are invited to exhibit in the show. It is not necessary to be a garden club member to enter. Advance registration is required for design entries. Class entries are limited and should follow the rules in the Handbook for Flower Shows. Tickets on sale now for Media Fellowship House anniversary celebration
Media Fellowship House will celebrate its 75th Anniversary 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at the Springfield Country Club. Special guest and keynote speaker will be CBS 60 Minutes reporter Bill Whitaker.

Newtown’s Paper Mill House and Square Tavern open to visitors on Saturdays
The 1828 Paper Mill House and Museum and the 1742 Square Tavern are operated by the Newtown Square Historical Society and are open to the public every Saturday from 1-4 p.m. through August 31. Admission is free.
The Square Tavern, at the intersection of Rt 252 and Goshen Rd., Newtown Township, has witnessed the progress of America’s growth and change since
1742. On the National Register of Historic Places, the Tavern was the home of young Benjamin West who grew up to become the Painter to King of England and the Father of American Art. West mentored some of the greatest artists of the age including Gilbert Stuart and Charles Wilson Peale. Costumed interpreters will be on site as visitors experience part of America’s past and a better understanding America’s foundation.
The Paper Mill House and Museum, at the intersection of St. David’s and Paper Mill Rds., Newtown Township, is a historic three story stone building along Darby Creek containing an
1850’s era general store, and three levels of a local history museum with artifacts representing the history of Newtown Township. The original building was constructed in 1828. The Paper Mill House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
