11 people rescued after being stranded on Brandywine River
Eleven people were rescued from the Brandywine River Sunday night following a tubing event. All were treated for hypothermia but otherwise unharmed.
It all began about 9:15 p.m. when a group of people were tubing on the Brandywine near the Smith Bridge Picnic area just over the Chester County border in New Castle, Delaware, and nightfall came upon them.
They became stranded on rocks and were unable to call 911.
Authorities were soon notified that the tubers were stranded, and helicopters wee deployed, police said.
The Longwood Fire Co. water rescue team was instrumental in assisting in the rescue. It took rescue crews about an hour to reach the 11 people, who have not been identified. They were evaluated and treated by EMS crews after being brought to land.
More than two dozen members from the Longwood Fire Company regularly participate in an Advanced Lines System Rescue class for these kinds of situations.
