BroomallNe­wtown advances to quarterfin­als

It’s on to the quarterfin­als for Broomall-Newtown at the Babe Ruth 14U World Series.

The Middle Atlantic champions bounced back from their only loss with a 4-0 victory over Wahpeton, N.D., the Midwest Plains champion Monday night at the Demopolis Sportsplex.

Broomall-Newtown finished 3-1 in pool play and in second place in the Tombigbee Division and will take on the winner of Monday’s game between Nassau, N.H and West Linn, Ore. Tuesday night at 8. The winner of Tuesday’s game advances to Wednesday’s semifinals against Fort Carolina, N.C., the winner of the Black Warrior Division. The semifinals winners square off at 7 Thursday for the championsh­ip.

Owen Mathes, Mike Govan and Mike Freeman combined on a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. Govan allowed one hit and struck out six in three innings to get the win. Mathes started and went two innings. Freeman pitched the final two frames to earn the save.

Broomall-Newtown scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gavin Doney went 2-for-2 to pace a six-hit attack. Alex Bruno was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Josh Freiling and Freeman drove in one run each.

This is the second year in a row Broomall-Newtown advanced to the quarterfin­als at the World Series. B-N fell to Eagle Pass, Texas in the 13U quarterfin­als last year.
