Registration underway for John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge archery deer hunt this autumn
TINICUM >> John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum will open a limited public recreational archery hunting program this fall, within the existing Pennsylvania archery deer season. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge strives to provide quality educational and outdoor recreation programs including hunting experiences for youth and adults who may not have the opportunity to hunt elsewhere. The archery hunt education events are open to the public.
Refuge staff and partners will be on hand to teach visitors more about archery and the deer hunt at the following events which are free and open to the public: Saturday, Aug. 24, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Intro to Archery and Hunting; Saturday, Sept.
21, 8- 4 p.m., Youth Hunter Education Training by the Pennsylvania Game Commission at the Refuge, registration is required; Saturday, Sept. 28- archery events at Philly Fall Nature Fest.
Archery deer hunt registration for Fall 2019 antlerless deer permits will be made available via a lottery to the following Pennsylvania Game Commission-defined licensed groups: Mentored Youth, ages 12 -16 with little or no hunting experience; Mentored Adult, ages
17 years and older with little or no hunting experience; Junior Hunter, age
12-16 year old junior license holders; active duty military; veterans; and people with disabilities.
All participants must possess a valid refuge hunting special use permit and comply with all terms and conditions. The mentored archery deer hunt provides individuals age 12 and over with little to no hunting experience an opportunity to participate in a managed deer hunt under the guidance of trained mentors on the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge.
Along with partners, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Quality Deer Management Association, the refuge staff will teach participants about the conservation history of hunting, deer biology and habitat, crossbow instruction, hunting safety and ethics, as well as, field game care and meat processing. Crossbows and ground blinds will be provided. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Refuge Hunt Areas and Closures Hunting will occur on approximately 170 of the 973 acres of the refuge. There will be up to 12 hunters per day, which represents four hunters per each of the three zones. Each zone has safety buffer zone from streets and buildings. No hunting is allowed from trails or boardwalks. The entire refuge will be closed to visitors during the hunting days.
The refuge will be open for hunting only on Oct. 9, 10, 11, 12, 23, 24, 25, and 26. Hunters selected via lottery will be required to attend an orientation that will include a review of hunter regulations, zone/location, assignment, and an archery skill assessment on Oct. 5.
To register for a permit to participate, hunters must submit a completed archery deer hunt application by 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30. The application is available at www.fws.gov/refuge/John_ Heinz/. Look for “2019 Archery Deer Hunt Registration” link on the website.
Community Action Agency announces updated website
The Community Action Agency of Delaware County Inc. has a new updated website at www.caadc.org. CAADC is a primary provider of social services to the residents of Delaware County including emergency housing, rental assistance, utility assistance, weatherization, workforce development initiatives, services to veterans and youth and senior programs.
The website now not only provides information on available services but also shares with the community the successes of the agency and how residents can help.
Public stargazing sessions resume at Widener University
The Widener University Observatory resumes its public stargazing sessions 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. All are invited to see the stars, planets and other celestial wonders using the observatory’s 12- and 16-inch computerized reflecting telescopes. Widener astronomy professors, with assistance from undergraduate students, will be on hand to offer assistance.
Monday twilight viewings will be held at the following times: Sept. 9, 16,
23, 30 from 8-9 p.m.; Oct.
7, 14, 28, from 7-8 p.m.; Nov.
4, 11, 18, and 25, from 6-7 p.m.; Dec. 2, 9, from 6-7 p.m.
Friday evening sessions will be held 8-9 p.m. on the following dates: Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1, and Dec. 6.

The observatory can be reserved for private group telescope viewing sessions. They consider requests for elementary and high school classes, Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, and other organizations. These sessions are generally held on Monday nights, separate from the public session. The maximum number of adults and children that can be accommodated is 40.
The Widener University Observatory is located on the fifth floor of Kirkbride Hall on 17th and Walnut streets in Chester.
Girls’ and Boys’ Clubs resume at Woodlyn Baptist Church
Woodlyn Baptist Church Rally Day is Sunday, Sept. 8 at 9:45 a.m. This begins a new season of Sunday School with new classes for ages 2 through 102. Then during the 11 a.m. worship service, students in pre-K through second grade may attend Children’s Church to further explore the Biblical teachings and enjoy snacks.
The Girls’ and Boys’ clubs are also resuming Sunday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. That’s G.E.M.S. (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior) for grades 1-12 and C.S.B. (Christian Service Brigade) for boys in grades 1-12. Children and teens are welcome to bring their friends and enjoy team building, fun activities, crafts, life skills, achievement badges, service projects, sports, outdoor activities, mentoring and Bible lessons.

Delaware County Community College’s free New Choices Career Development program can help participants gain the knowledge and skills they need to determine a career path, find a job and achieve their goals. For more than 35 years, New Choices has provided individual and group support, career assessment and planning, employer contacts, and networking opportunities. In addition, New Choices provides resume writing, interviewing techniques and a computer refresher course, with the aim of helping students find a successful career and a fresh start.
