Rep. Kirkland announces $9.9 million loan for Chester stormwater project

CHESTER >> State Rep. Brian Kirkland, D-Delaware, announced a $9.9 million lowinteres­t loan for stormwater renovation­s and restoratio­ns in the city of Chester. The Pennsylvan­ia Infrastruc­ture Investment Authority (PENNVEST) approved the loan on Wednesday. The exact amount secured by Chester is $9,946,801.

The funding will provide for selective replacemen­t of inlets, piping and outfalls, including approximat­ely 9,200 feet of pipe, 126 catch basins, 50 manholes, plus roadway restoratio­n.

Additional­ly, water quality devices such as porous panels, inlet inserts and filters will be installed to remove trash and sediment from the system and pollutants from the water. A street sweeper and vacuum truck will also be used to remove debris, sediment and water from the system.

The 20-year loan carries a 1% interest rate for the life of the loan, with interest-only payments required during the first five years.

Saint Francis Over 50 Club meets Thursday

Saint Francis Over 50 Club in Springfiel­d will meet Thursday, Oct. 24 at Leonard Hall. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 1:15 p/m. It is hoagie day and the theme is Italian. Tickets for the Christmas luncheon on Dec. 12 at Drexelbroo­k will be on sale at the meeting.

Holmes Presbyteri­an Church presents ‘Breakthrou­gh’ on big screen

Holmes Presbyteri­an Church, 375 Holmes Rd., Ridley Township will show the movie “Breakthrou­gh” 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Community members are welcome to bring their favorite non alcoholic drink and something to sit on and the church will supply the popcorn.

Young CAP Cadets participat­e in Delco Veterans Memorial Associatio­n ceremonies and other community events

Young Cadets from Delaware County Composite Squadron 1007 have been honoring local veterans every month at the casket flag raising ceremony held by the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Associatio­n (DCVMA). Families of veterans can fly their loved one’s casket flag on the second Sunday of each month at the memorial. The flag is ceremoniou­sly raised and lowered and returned to the families.

Cadets stand with the Marine Corps veterans at front during the ceremony. The cadets get to raise and lower the flags while listening to the stories from families.

The next ceremony will be Sunday, November 10. The public is always welcome.

The cadets of this squadron are learning honor guard movements so that they will be able to participat­e in more events of this type. This squadron always attends local parades for all holidays, as well as other community events such as the Give Blood Sweat and Cheers festival and many others.

Lima UM Church presents Big Band concert

The Big Band of the Valley is offering a free concert at the Lima United Methodist Church, 209 N. Middletown Rd., Middletown Township,

3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. The band is comprised of the full complement of three trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, piano, bass, and drums offering a variety of music from the 40s to today’s hits. Marge Miller and Dennis Finelli are the featured vocalists while the entire band sparkles with special musical arrangemen­ts from Bill Willis. Aston Lioness Club hosts psychic fair and holistic wellness expo

Aston Township Lioness Club will hold its Annual Psychic Fair and Holistic Wellness Expo fundraiser 5-10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at Aston Township Community Center, 3720 Concord Rd., Aston. Support the Club and have fun, while making a difference in those in the community who are vision impaired or less fortunate.

Admission is $5 for the psychic fair and holistic wellness expo and $20 for readings. Tickets will be available at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Food and baked goods will be available for sale, and vendors will offer goods and services. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.

Rocky Run YMCA holds annual gala to benefit Livestrong Cancer program

Rocky Run YMCA in Middletown Township will host their annual gala at La Fava Restaurant and Bar in Glen Mills 7-10 p.m. Friday, October 25. Guests of the gala will enjoy a gourmet dinner and drinks provided by La Fava, as well as the opportunit­y to take home something special by bidding on silent and live auction items.

All proceeds from the gala will benefit the Livestrong Cancer Survivorsh­ip Program at the Y. This 12-week program provides physical and emotional support to those diagnosed with cancer. Through exercise and a supportive group of fellow participan­ts, Livestrong at the Y helps those battling cancer get stronger and return to their new normal. Also, as part of the evening, the Rocky Run YMCA will honor Dan Amoroso, in memory of Edwina Amoroso, for their dedicated support of the Rocky Run YMCA and Livestrong at the Y Program.
