Friends of Swarthmore Public Library hold fall book sale
SWART ORE » The fall Friends of Swarthmore Public Library Book & Bake Sale will be held Nov. 7-9, and will feature a huge array of books, movies, music, sheet music, and puzzles that will satisfy a wide spectrum of interests and age groups. A large and varied assortment of homemade baked goods will also be available for sale.
The Book & Bake Sale hours are
9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7;
9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8; and
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. Friday is half-price day Saturday is Bag Day, with most books costing $5 per bag, and rare and boutique books costing $20 per bag.
The sale takes place at Swarthmore Borough Hall, 121 Park Ave., Swarthmore, and all proceeds from the sale support Swarthmore Public Library.
Lansdowne Public Library holds comic convention
LANSDOWNE » Lansdowne Public Library, 55 S. Lansdowne Ave., will hold “Comic Jawn,” a comic convention with vendors, craft tables, panels, contests, games and more, 12-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. All are welcome to the free event.
The day after, on Sunday, Nov.
3 at 7 p.m., the public is invited to travel back in time to hear ballads of Robin Hood from the 15th Century. Light refreshments will be served, and people are welcome to bring their own food and drink as well. This event will feature four actors reading some of the oldest surviving ballads of everyone’s favorite outlaw.

Magic show teaches Halloween safety
TINIC » Tinicum Memorial Public Library, 620 Seneca St., Essington, will host a Halloween Safety Magic Show 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct.
26. Kids are invited to take an amazing fun-filled trip around a neighborhood of witches, warlocks, ghosts, and other monsters to catch a ghost, make an invisibility potion, and see what special powers they have inside.
The program is designed to entertain while conveying important Halloween safety tips for children to remember and put into practice while trick-or treating.

Clothing and Shoe Drive Fundraiser at Ridley Township Library
RIDLE TOWNS IP » The Friends of the Ridley Township Public Library will conduct a clothing and shoe drive fundraiser 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, in the lower level parking lot of the library. People can help the Friends raise money for the library by cleaning out closets, attics, garages and basements.
Donors are asked to place their gently used, unwanted items in tightly tied bags. The more the collection weighs, the more money raised. Donations can include children’s and adult’s shoes, clothing, handbags, coats, rain gear, belts, ties, sheets, hats, scarves, gloves, pillowcases, towels, linens, tablecloths, jewelry, backpacks, leather goods and new diapers.
The Friends will not accept books, toys, games, curtains, pillows, stuffed animals, bric-a-brac, furniture, or leftover flea market or yard sale merchandise.

Springfield Library holds Star Party
SPRINGFIELD » Springfield Township Library invites the community to its first-ever Star Party, presented by the Delaware Valley Amateur Astronomy Club, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4. Party attendees can learn and observe the moon and the planet Saturn. Popcorn will be provided as people observe the skies in “The Bowl,” the field between the Township Building and Library. • The Springfield Library will once again be a drop off location for Toys For Tots. The bins are located inside the doors of either floor, where people an drop off a new, unwrapped gift for children in need.
• Those who enjoy the holidays, but get stressed out with all the extra things to get done, can take some of the stress out of their holidays this year by attending a program presented by professional organizer Kim Myers. “Get Organized for a Stress-Free Holiday” will be offered 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11. Poet visits Swarthmore Library to sign and read book on Wednesday
SWART ORE » Poet Ernestine Louise will read and hold a signing of her first-ever poetry book, “Influence of Place,” at Swarthmore Public Library 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. The book was published in September. The poet is making the stop as part of her tour in Norway and the U.S.
Louise was Tina Johnson when she lived in Delaware County. After studying philosophy and literature, she graduated from University
of Utah and worked with the Dali Lama. She started the Chester’s Co-op Food Store in Chester when there were no supermarkets. The poetry and prose writer has many friends in Delaware County because she was involved in Swarthmore Rotary, several churches and she also ran for state representative.
She became somewhat of an expert in climate change and the Hammer Museum at UCLA flew her across the country to interview Al Gore on his second book about the global warming emergency.
Johnson then moved to Spain to learn to explore writing full time, and finally moving to Norway to pursue life as a poet. She currently lives in Oslo, Norway. For more information on the poet, visit www.ernestinelouise.com.
Friends of Upper Chi Library hold soup sale
PPER C IC ESTER » A flavorful outpouring of international soups will be available for purchase at Creekside Village’s Annual Village Craft Fair, Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Clubhouse, Naamans Creek Road, Boothwyn. Proceeds will help defray Upper Chichester Library’s operating expenses and fund diverse educational and cultural programs.
Members of Friends of the Upper Chichester Library will trade book jackets for chef hats in preparing 12 tasty soups from scratch. Sale price is $9 per quart.
Some of the soups include butternut squash, split pea and ham, zuppa Toscana, Greek lemon chicken and turkey chili. The public can select and pay for their soups by visiting the library at 3374 Chichester Ave. #19, Upper Chichester. Orders will be picked up at the craft fair. Betsy Barnes, Library Director, advises people to place their orders soon, as many soups sell out ahead of the fair date.
