Connors, Kingsbury lead Carroll past Wood in regular-season finale

Carliegh Connors and Julia Kingsbury led the way as Archbishop Carroll closed out the regular season with a 4-0 victory over Archbishop Wood in Catholic League field hockey action Monday.

The Patriots (8-9 overall, 9-1) finished in second place and received a bye to Friday’s semifinal round of the league playoffs.

Connors scored two goals and Kingsbury added two assists. Karlie Dougherty and Lana Pergine added one goal each and Grace DiMascio made one save to post the shutout.

Cardinal O’Hara finished first and also received a bye to the semifinals. Thirdseede­d Bonner-Prendergas­t hosts sixth-seeded Little Flower in Wednesday’s quarterfin­als. Fourthseed­ed Archbishop Ryan faces fifth-seeded Lansdale Catholic in the other quarterfin­al matchup.

Volleyball

Senior co-captains Riley Shaak and Maddie Donaphon showed the way on senior day for Notre Dame in a 3-1 nonleague victory over Villa Maria Academy.

Shaak pounded 13 kills and also had five aces for the Irish (14-3, 7-1 Inter-Ac).

Donaphon paced the defense with 27 digs and also had four aces.

Golf

Strath Haven’s Grace Smith is in a three-way tie for 10th place after the first day of competitio­n in the PIAA Class 3A girls golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Smith recorded a 10over par 82 and is tied with Amanda Gerrish of Hershey and Ammala Moua of Cocalico.

Lower Merion freshman Sydney Yermish shot an even-par 72 to take a onestroke lead over Elizabeth

Beek of Wissahicko­n and Victoria King from West Chester East.

In boys Class 3A, Radnor’s Jack Hamilton is in a five-way tie for 24th place after the first day of competitio­n.

Hamilton carded a 9-over par 80.

Carson Bacha of Central York fired a 4-under par 67 to take a one-shot lead over Adam Laufer of Shady Side Academy.

Cross Country

Owen Maier Bradley French and Connor Hanrahan placed in the top 10 to lead Episcopal Academy to its first Inter-Ac League boys cross country title since 2015.

Maier was third, French sixth and Hanrahan eighth to pace the Churchmen. Charlie Kraftson (11th) and William Sargent (19th) rounded out the scoring for the Churchmen.

Maier finished in 17:17.20 to help EA edge Germantown Academy, 47-49, for the team title.

On the girls side, Theresa Trainer and Lindsey Smith finished third and fourth, respective­ly, to lead Notre Dame to a second-place in the team competitio­n.

The Irish were topped by Penn Charter, 41-47. Cara Stevenson also was in the top 10 for ND. She was ninth.

Jilliana McEntee finished sixth and Alexandra Gobran was 10th for Episcopal Academy. Sarah Toth was Agnes Irwin’s top finisher. She was 22nd.

AJ Sanford was fifth, Lleyton Winslow finished

14th and Ben Szathmary

15th to lead the Haverford School.

Boys Water Polo

Episcopal Academy dropped a 13-10 decision with Wilson. No other details were reported.
