100 Years Ago – 1919: “Regular” Republicans of the pure, unadulterated brand were pretty well betrayed in those precincts in Chester and the county where the official pallbearers of the old organization are entrenched. In the districts where the real creatures of the McClures held forth, the returns indicate organized slashing of the ticket nominated by the primaries in the rage of the disappointed McClure parasites.

75 Years Ago – 1944: Tomorrow an estimated

140,000 Delaware Countians will go to the polls to cast their votes in the most intense presidential election in recent years. It will be the first wartime election in 80 years – since that of 1864, when President Abraham Lincoln was opposed for re-election by Gen. McClellan. With Pennsylvania pointed to by the professional pollsters as the state on which the election hinges, Republican leaders are looking to Delaware County for votes.

50 Years Ago – 1969: Republicans grabbed all the county row offices in Tuesday’s general election in Delaware County, but suffered surprising defeats in several municipal elections. Less than 55percent of the county’s 302,392 registered voters went to the polls despite generally favorable weather. The number voting was set unofficially at 161,584. Possibly one of the most significant GOP setbacks was the defeat of Edith Hannum, a Haverford commissioner for 47 years. In Rutledge, meanwhile, Democrats won the mayoralty and unseated four Republican councilmen.

25 Years Ago – 1994:

A proposal to widen the Blue Route to three lanes through southern Delaware County showed signs of life yesterday, just two weeks after being left for dead. County Councilman Paul G. Mattus initially suggested that traffic congestion on the southern portion of the road be alleviated by using the shoulders as travel lanes. PennDOT rejected the idea last month, citing concerns about safety and complications involving promises the department made to opponents of the road before it was built.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Local Democratic leaders are predicting more political changes ahead following Tuesday’s win in the Chester City Council race. But Republicans say their party made a competitive showing despite a rising tide of Democratic registrations. Democrats John Linder and Portia West won two council seats. It is only the third time the party has won those offices since 1906.
