100 Years Ago – 1919: The government Internal Revenue Officers working here have establishe­d the fact that speakeasie­s are flourishin­g. The officers believe that several are doing business in Leipervill­e. On Saturday night, quite a number of persons were seen edging their way through the usual big crowd of shoppers and pleasure seekers who had been imbibing something more powerful than one-half of 1 percent.

75Years Ago – 1944: Constructi­on of the new

$68,000element­ary school in Green Ridge, which was held up when the Philadelph­ia Buildings Trades Union, AFL, called off the workers because the electrical work

was being done by a nonunion contractor – Jesse C. Marshall of Prospect Park, a one-man contractor who has been doing electrical work in Delaware County for 25years – is expected to be resumed on Monday, it was learned this morning. Because of the war-swollen population in Aston Township, the Federal Works Agency granted $51,000 of the costs.

50Years Ago – 1969: Officials of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Delaware County are urging a massive display of the national colors on Veterans Day Tuesday, as a demonstrat­ion of support for U.S. military forces in Vietnam. “Let’s put every flag we own on public display to offset the damaging image

presented by the recent antiwar moratorium” said Alfred Mattera, VFW 7th District Commander and member of Herbert W. Best Post 928in Folsom, Ridley Township.

25Years Ago – 1994: A Collingdal­e company seeking to turn an old cotton mill on

25th Street into a business incubator has questioned the appropriat­eness of the site’s residentia­l zoning during a Chester City Council meeting. Several small businesses have already expressed interest in leasing space at the site, on the border with Nether Providence and Ridley townships. While Mayor Barbara Bohannan Sheppard pointed out the area is all residentia­l, John McMahon and Doug Wright, principals of Triangle Commerce Center, said the mill has been in

existence for nearly 150years, and predates the surroundin­g neighborho­ods. Therefore, they reasoned the site should be grandfathe­red-in for business or commercial use.

10Years Ago – 2009: Aston Township volunteer Thomas Sprows was recently named

2009Townsh­ip Citizen of the Year. Commission­ers President Gary Robinson praised Sprows for his dedication to the township and especially for his work as secretary on the Aston Township Veterans Memorial Garden Foundation Committee. Sprows, 65, resided in Aston for 36years prior to moving to Bethel Township in June 2009. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an air policeman from 1963-1967.
