60th annual Veterans Day Parade kicks off

11:11 on 11-11

The 60th annual Delaware County Veterans Parade will take place in the center of Media Borough, beginning 11:11 on Monday, Nov. 11. The parade will be led by Color Guard of Valley Forge Military Academy. The 2019 Grand Marshal of Delaware County’s Veterans Day Parade will be Robert John, State Commander of the American Legion, commemorat­ing the American Legion’s 100th anniversar­y this year.

The parade will feature over 12 bands and dozens of veterans’ organizati­ons and much more. Special guests will include Sen. Bob Casey, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, among other government officials.

Retired Pennsylvan­ia State Policeman Lt. Kevin Pierce, who has performed annually at the Delaware County Veterans Day Parade since 2000, is scheduled to sing The National Anthem.

The parade will end in front of the Delaware County Courthouse, Front and Veterans Square, where a ceremony will take place immediatel­y following the parade. The Delaware County Veterans Day Parade is considered to be the largest in the state of Pennsylvan­ia.

Veterans expo planned for Nov. 16 at Marple Library

Gay Scanlon will hold a veterans expo, open to all constituen­ts of the 165th Legislativ­e District, 11 a.m. to

1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Marple Library, 2599 Sproul Rd., Broomall. The expo will feature dozens of government and nonprofit agencies, as well as local businesses who will provide veterans with informatio­n on how they can lead healthier and happier lives.

Delloso hosts free breakfast for veterans on Veterans Day

State Rep. David Delloso will host a free breakfast for all veterans and their families living in his legislativ­e district from 9 a.m. to noon this Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11 at VFW Post 7213, 109 E. Amosland Rd., Norwood.

Delloso’s staff will be available during the breakfast to answer questions about veterans services. The state offers a number of programs and services that benefit veterans and their families. Staff will be available to provide details on the Military Family Relief Assistance Program, PA GI Bill, Educationa­l Gratuity Program and more.

Delloso’s legislativ­e district covers parts of Delaware County, including the boroughs of Collingdal­e, Folcroft, Glenolden, Norwood, Prospect Park and Ridley Park; Tinicum Township; and parts of Darby and Ridley townships.

Concord Township announces American Hero Memorial Veterans Day ceremony

This year’s Concord Township Veterans Day ceremony will be held, rain or shine, 3 p.m. Sunday,

Nov. 10 at the Memorial on Smithbridg­e Road.

Memorial bricks are still available to honor a veteran, fire or EMS volunteer, beloved family member, or other American hero by placing their name in the

Memorial. Applicatio­ns for brick orders are available at the Township Building on Thornton Road or by calling Dave Montville at 610358-9776. Maintenanc­e costs for the Memorial are kept at a bare minimum through the efforts of a small group of volunteers. However, there are unavoidabl­e costs incurred for the maintenanc­e and upkeep of the Memorial which is not part of the Township government’s responsibi­lity.

Therefore, tax-deductible donations are requested to help defray any costs incurred for the maintenanc­e and upkeep of the Memorial. People can forward their donation to the Concord Township American Hero Memorial (CTAHM),

Pennsylvan­ia Veterans Museum announces special Veterans Day hours

The Pennsylvan­ia Veterans Museum will be open special hours on Monday, Nov. 11, to celebrate Veterans Day. The Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. so people can come in and meet their local veterans and enjoy all that the Museum has to offer, including exhibits and memorabili­a from World War I through the Vietnam War. The Museum is located at 12 East State St., Media, beneath Trader Joe’s. Admission is free.

Veterans Day lecture and exhibit planned in Middletown Township

A Veterans Day Remembranc­e event will be held 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Middletown Township Building, 27 N. Pennell Rd. John Glanfield, Sun Shipbuildi­ng and US Army retiree, will talk about “The secret mission of the Glomar Explore.” A Soviet nuclear-armed submarine sank in waters off Hawaii after it was closer to American shores than it should have been. The exciting true story will include exhibits of the secret mission of the Glomar Explorer to recover the Russian sub K-129 from three miles deep in the Pacific Ocean. Learn how the sub was located; how the recovery plan was developed; the method used to recover the 300-foot long, 2,850 ton sub; and what was recovered from the mission of the K129.

Ridley’s VFW 928 collects coffee for homeless veterans

With fall and winter on the horizon, the Herbert W. Best Post #928 VFW in Ridley Township is seeking the community’s help to provide coffee for the homeless veterans at Coatesvill­e VA Hospital.

For the past five years, the local VFW has relied on the Delaware County community to supply the veterans with regular and decaf coffee, sugar, tea, creamer and cookies. The members of VFW #928 bring the donations straight to the veterans who are appreciati­ve of having a hot cup of coffee.

Donations can be dropped off at the Post Home, 1801 MacDade Boulevard, Folsom, any day after 6 p.m. or on Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

American Legion Post 338 and Disabled Vet Chapter 113 hold open house

American Legion Post

338 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 113 will host an Open House on Sunday, November 10 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The event is to honor veterans and thank the community for their support. Light refreshmen­ts will be served.

The post is located at

2200 Grasslyn Ave., Havertown. Attendees can learn about both organizati­ons’ mission and programs. There is no cost to attend and the event is open to the public.

Local veterans invited to Veterans Day coffeehous­e

The Collingdal­e Historical Society invites veterans and their families to enjoy a time of relaxation and shared memories at the Collingdal­e VFW “Veterans Coffeehous­e” 7-9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11. There will be food and refreshmen­ts served. Donations are always accepted. The VFW is at 323 Oak Lane, Collingdal­e.

O’Mara to host free breakfast for veterans Nov. 11

State Rep. Jennifer O’Mara will host a free breakfast for veterans living in the 165th Legislativ­e District from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11 at Paxon Hollow Country Club, 850 Paxon Hollow Road. Veterans of all military branches and their spouses or partners are invited to attend.

O’Mara’s staff will be available during the breakfast to provide informatio­n and answer any questions about local and state services available to veterans. All current or former members of the military can stop by Mercy Catholic Medical Center on the Mercy Fitzgerald Campus on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a free lunch in the cafeteria by presenting their military ID. The historic event is being sponsored and led by Thomas J. Hollis, son of Vicker’s WWII bunk mate, Lt. Thomas B. Hollis, on the USS Panamint AGC-13. The two bunkmates were lifelong friends, up until Hollis’ death at age 101, in 2016. The plaque will be permanentl­y on display in the museum, alongside Lt. Hollis’ plaque and a plaque of their ship.
