No. 1 Swarthmore off and running with win over Eastern

The No. 1 men’s basketball team in Division III got its season off to a fast start Saturday.

Six players scored in double figures as Swarthmore, the No. 1 team in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, opened the season with a 100-72 victory over Eastern.

Justin Tucker led the way with 18 points in 18 minutes. George Visconti added 15 points, Vinny DeAngelo (Sun Valley All-Delco) 12, Ryan Ingram and Nate Shaffer 11 each and Zac O’Dell pitched in with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

William Blet (16 points), Draig Ruff (11), Clifton Adams (11) and Michael Bowlers (10) showed the way for the Eagles.

PSU-YORK 72, WILLIAMSON 52 >> Kyle Morgan collected 16 points and three rebounds to pace the Mechanics (0-4). John Mastella added nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

WIDENER 70, MOUNT ALOYSIUS 57 >> Elijah Boyd’s 16 points and eight rebounds paced the Pride in its opener. Kenny Lewis chipped in with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Pat Holden had 13 points and two assists.

NEUMANN 89, KEAN 75 >> Nasir Cassel poured in 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Knights to an opening night win. Haneef Vaughn added 23 points. Dennis Robinson chipped in with 13 points and Waheem Lowman 12.

Women’s Basketball

Devan Rimmer paced four players in double figures with 16 points and six rebounds as Widener rolled over St. Mary’s, 72-43, in the season opener for both teams.

Erin Phelan (14 points), Kyra Schenk (career-high 11) and Helena Salmon (11) also reached double digits for the Pride.

ROBERT MORRIS 71, LA SALLE 68 >> Sophomore Kayla Spruill dropped in a career-high 19 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Explorers fell in overtime.

PENN 92, SIENNA 44 >> Eleah Parker led four players in double figures for the Quakers with 21 points. Mia Lakstigala added 18, Kayla Padilla 14 and Michael Jones 10.

DREXEL 74, DAVIDSON 63 >> Senior Bailey Greenberg matched her career high with 31 points to pace the

Dragons in the Preseason WNIT. Keishana Washington added 18 points and Niki Metzel pitched in with 10.

JAMES MADISON 56, VILLANOVA 52 >> Mary Gedaka tossed in 16 points, Madison Siegrist added 14 and Bridget Herlihy 10 as the Wildcats fell for the second straight game.

Men’s Soccer

Eastern scored three unanswered goals, one in the first half and two in the second, to beat King’s College, 3-1, for its fourth MAC Freedom title in five years.

Derek Buhrman won it in the 61st minute with his first goal of the season. Alex McGlynn tallied his first goal of the season five minutes later to seal the game. Nik Kokolios netted his first goal of the season in the 21st minute to tie the game. IMMACULATA 4, CABRINI 3 >> The Mighty Macs scored three times in the second half to win the Atlantic East title. John Bohrer’s goal in the 80th minute was the difference for Immaculata.

Matt Duddy, Dakota Bauer and Josh Cunningham scored for the Cavaliers.

Women’s Soccer

Diana VanSickle and Rebekah Cunningham scored one goal each to lead Cabrini to its first Atlantic East title with a 2-0 victory over Marywood. The triumph also establishe­d a program record for wins in a season with 15. Brianna Blair was named tournament MVP.
