100 Years Ago – 1919:

For Motor Owners: “No person, whether the owner of a motor vehicle or not, who is less than 16years of age, who is mentally impaired, or who is physically incapable, shall operate any motor vehicle upon any public highway in this state.” This is a section from Pennsylvan­ia’s new vehicle code. See that the regulation is observed.

75 Years Ago – 1944:

George J. Hunter, known to thousands of Delaware Countians as a guard at the courthouse in Media, died at his home, 2400 W. Third St., Chester, at 3:30 a.m. today after a threemonth illness. Chester will remember him as a former councilman and former popular proprietor of the old Columbia Hotel, Third and Palmer streets, in the days before Prohibitio­n. Known to everyone as Shep, he came to Chester as a small boy from Savanna, Ga., where he was born. He lived in the West End his entire life and always took a keen interest in civic affairs.

50 Years Ago – 1969:

Bernard H. White, president of the Radnor Board of Commission­ers, said today he will seek the Republican nomination for Congress in the 7th District in the spring primary election. The district lies wholly in Delaware County and the seat is now held by Rep.

Lawrence G. Williams of Springfiel­d. Williams has not announced whether he will seek re-election. “In reaching the moon this year,” White said, “we have set a fitting precedent for the 1970s.”

25 Years Ago – 1994:

Two hammer-toting robbers smashed a wedding ring case at Gordon’s Jewelers in the Granite Run Mall and escaped with 10 rings valued at about $15,000, Monday night, state police reported. After the jewel heist that occurred about 6 p.m., the robbers fled in a 1986 white Chevrolet Celebrity which was recovered within the mall parking lot. It had been stolen from the mall earlier.

10 Years Ago – 2009:

A 29-year-old South Philadelph­ia man is behind bars after allegedly taking a swing at a Chester police officer and threatenin­g another officer’s life. The man was ordered to leave the area after causing a ruckus at a West 22nd Street home. As he left, he allegedly began screaming and shouting obscenitie­s at one officer and allegedly threatened to have the officer killed. He told the officer he knew people who would kill him, and if they did not, he’d do it himself. When he was taken into police headquarte­rs, he allegedly tried to punch another officer.
