100 Years Ago – 1919: Charged with bootlegging among the employees of the Sun Shipbuilding Company, a man, who claims to live in this city, pleaded guilty before Judge Thompson, sitting in the United States Court in Philadelphia. The defendant, of whom little is known, confessed to having whiskey in his possession and also with having it among the ship workers. When arrested he had six quarts in his possession. He was promptly sentenced to 30days in jail on both counts.

75 Years Ago – 1944: We’ll try to get through this without saying anything about getting anybody’s goat. And we won’t pull any cracks about kidding people. But yesterday in the county court at Media, a full day was spent in a discussion of goats. The goats in question belong to William C. Grover, of Evergreen Avenue, Larchmont. And they were in question from eight of Mr. Grover’s neighbors who didn’t like living near the herd, which they claimed violated a Marple Township ordinance, “by reason of their odor and noise.”

Police said he was caught as he tried to run away from a “hippie party” in Norwood during a police raid. The prisoner, of the 1100block of Chestnut Street , was grabbed by CID Detectives Edward A. Smith and Ernest Bryant following a half-block chase on Winona Avenue.

25 Years Ago – 1994: The Past Masters in Early American Domestic Arts will present a full-costume re-enactment of colonial holiday traditions at the Old Chester Courthouse, Avenue of the States, on Saturday. The courthouse, built in 1724, was once the seat of Chester County. When Delaware County was formed from the southeastern part of Chester County in 1789, the courthouse became the Delaware County government seat until 1851 when it was moved to Media. The Past Masters are hoping their program will focus attention on the deteriorating condition of the building.
